In the top half of the program this one will be televised over CBS, channel 4 the Navy and Marine Corps renew their age- old, unsettled argument of supremacy as s former machinist mate Irish Bob Murphy y takes on ex-sgt. Danny Nardico in a sched- - uled 10-round light heavyweight affair. The second part of the feature, carded at t the same distance, brings together a pair of f local lightweights, veteran Freddie Dawson i and Luther Rawlings. Back in the summer of 1945 about the e time the war ended, the Navy forbade e sailor Edward Conarty to fight profession- ally. With the thought in mind — "Damn the • admiral, full steam ahead" — Conarty took k the ring tag, Irish Bob Murphy and did so 0 well with it that he decided that Conarty y should forever remain Murphy. After almost six years of mauling the pros, Murphy elevated himself to the height of third ranking contender for the 175-pound _ throne. His unorthodox southpaw w style was enough to knock over most of the e club bums and a few promising fighters on n the West Coast. Stopped Wagner in First Round But when the San Diego Irishman in-k - vaded New Yorks Madison Square Garden ■ e last fall his long string of knockouts didnt ■ impress the Gotham crowd. His first match e sent him against Dick Wagner and the • b ring officials were given an easy time of e it that night, as Murphy stopped Wagner i in the first frame, ft After that the East took this aggressive, •- power-punching, westerner to its heart as J h he sounded taps for four other opponents a d in succession. by y Murphy has lost only one bout since e of f leaving the Coast, that one to Harry "Kid" m n Matthews, another rugged westerner. In one of the top television presentations of |f f. the year Murphy was decided against after ,r It 10 rounds. t, Since then Bob has scored three kayos a k and lost one bout on a foul. His record d to ■o shows 57 victories, 52 of these were knock - -h outs, against five defeats. Some of the e better maulers he has disposed of are Dave e h Whitlock, Jimmy Beau, Henry Brimm, Dan n K Bucceroni, Cecil Hudson and Wagner. ;s Murphy is fully aware of Nardicos s n punch. After watching his intended oppose i- nent in a sparring session at Vaughn Gen-it i- eral Monday, Bob remarked, "That guy can n h hit, but they tell me I can, too, so someone should go down. It ought to be quite e n a fight." a a Nardico has less than two years of pro-rl [~ fessional mauling behind him, but his score • of 19 knockouts in 24 bouts is promising. ie He has been beaten four times and drew • f- thrice. Most of his encounters were with n id many lads like himself, only not quite as 18 st tough. KO of Barone Big Factor E E. In one he gained a a e, 10-round decision over Sonny Home and d r, recently stopped Nick Barone in the tenth at Miami Beach. It was the latter tussle that put Danny ty on the fight map. Barone has weathered the distance against such worthy battlers rs as explosive Bob Satterfield and went 11 II title rounds with heavy champ Ezzard d Charles. j. s Nardico will give away about six pounds ls aj to the favored Murphy, who revealed yes-terday ,_ his intention of scaling 177 pounds |I g for the fight. Long a hometown favorite, Dawson will on be making his first showing here in Chi- i- „ cago since March of last year. He is a a definite favorite in this one, but his less ss experienced opponent is gathering support. t. t Freddie knows he must win this time to to rate another shot at Ike Williams crown. a. " In nine years Dawson has amassed 77 wins, a, 32 by kayos, against nine reversals and id . three ties. to Dawson is a stocky little battler and an ,n * expert counter-puncher. Rawlings, although a decided underdog, g, is very confident and aware of this, his big Lg — chance. Says the young South Sider, "If If the ie Williams fights a Chicago boy for the title, e, p- itll be me — after I get through with ;h to to Dawson." the ie As doubtful as this appears it is not impossible. l- In his first fight after a years s i- a a ss t. to to a. a, id an ,n ly *r »r g, big Lg "If If e, ;h l- s lay-off, caused by an auto accident, Raw- r_ lings impressed those who watched him n take charge of Ronnie Harper and ulti- ■v_ mately score a 10-round knockout, Of Rawlings 27 wins, only nine were .e gained by the kayo route. He has been ;n beaten six times, twice being knocked out. The choice preliminary affair tonight H sees Chuck Davey, the Michigan State . scholar, go against Marlin Pettis in a six- " round welter bout.
