Star mount Colt Rated Choice* Over Trick Pilot, Prize Ring In Five-Furlong Headliner By BOB HORWOOD Staff Correspondent JAMAICA, L. I., N. Y., May 8.— Nine juvenile colts and two geldings of the same age are slated to meet in the thirty-ninth running of the 0,000 Youthful Stakes at Jamaica tomorrow. This is the first stake for the male youngsters of the New York season and in past years has been won by such hostages as Man o War, Tryster, Bud Lerner, Requested, Lucky Draw and more recently, Ferd and Battlefield. Last year the stake was split with Iswas winning the first division on the disqualification of Bank Account, and Battlefield taking the second half of the five-furlong fixture. Starmount Stables Primate looms the likely choice tomorrow, closely followed in the wagering market by Vera S. Braggs Trick Pilot and Gustave Rings Prize Ring. There also will be some support for Fred W. Hoopers Royal Stream and Cain Hoy Stables Armegeddon. Arcaro to Ride Eddie Arcaro will guide Primate, who beat Trick Pilot easily here in his last start on April 24, and finished second in his three previous starts. No rider has been named as yet for Trick Pilot, who followed his defeat by Primate by some half a dozen lengths in the van of a good field four days later. Trick Pilots winning time was exactly the same as the :59 that Primate required in beating him. Prize Ring, who breaks from the No. 1 Continued on Page Six | x J. Ted Atkinson, who will ride him tomorrow, urged him along in Vs on April 21, when he beat Busy Signal by a length and a half. When the son of Mahmoud finished third behind Jet Master and Union Lady in the Hialeah Juvenile Stakes, his shins appeared to be giving him trouble, which didnt prevent trainer C. M. "Chief" Feltner from having full confidence in his charge. Prize Ring won his next two starts, both of them here and showed con-15 siderable gameness in both races. This may be a factor, as the courage of his chief rivals has yet to be severely tested. Royal Stream has not been seen since the Florida season, but the gelded son of Coldstream won his last two starts at Hia-y. leah and Gulfstream Park with considerable ease, while racing very greenly in his only other start. Basil James will ride the youngster at 122 pounds. The colt carried that impost when he trounced Trick Pilot by four lengths at Hialeah. Armageddon has started only twice, fin- ishing second to Brookridge in the fastest race of the Hialeah meeting, but about a second behind the winner, then winning here in :593/5 on April 12. The field he beat has not distinguished itself in subse-70 quent races. No rider has been named as yet, but Ovie Scurlock is a likely prospect. The Youthful field is completed by Jack Amiels Count Flame, Sunshine Stables Sunnyland, John Clinton Clarks Charlie McAdam, Samuel Denemarks Denny, Henry Lewis III.s Privilege and Amiels Whirling-away. Oddly enough, A m i e 1 acquired Count Flame for ,500 which is 00 more than paid for the Derby winner, Count Turf, and he may well have another bargain. Count Flame has started three times in his brief career, all at this meeting, placing behind Sulmari in his last and winning and finishing third in his other two races. Con Errico is slated to ride the Count Fleet colt. Sunnyland has showed little. Charlie McAdam won a slow race here, then was badly beaten and has the almost fatal misfortune of being nabed for a newspaperman. Denny is a first -time starter by War Dog. Privilege won one of his three starts here, but has carried a claiming tag. Whirlingaway, , who cost Amiel ,300 more than his Derby winner, won a claimer here for his debut, then finished far back of Prize Ring, racing very wide in the manner of his sire, Whirl-away, at the same age.
