Joost and Fain Homer to Help Shantz Take First This Year By the United Press Bobby Shantz, a sore-arm southpaw whose Philadelphia Athletic teammates got him only one run in two previous defeats, got 13 -hit support yesterday and eased to a 9 to 4 triumph, his first of the year, over the White Sox before 3,309 fans. Shantz had near perfect control. He struck out only one, but he issued just two walks and was in serious trouble only once, in the third. The Sox got three of their 12 hits then but had to settle for only one run. The Athletics found starting and losing pitcher Dick Littlefields wildness to their liking in the first inning. Littlefield walked Ferris Fain, issued a single to Dave Philley and then walked Sam Chapman and Billy Hitchcock to force in one run. After Littlefield threw two balls to Pete Suder, Harold Brown replaced him and completed the walk to force in another marker. Then Joe Astroth singled, his first hit of the year in 15 times at bat, to drive home two more runners. Home runs by Eddie Joost, his fourth of the year, and Fain, his first, off Brown in the second, accounted for enough Philadelphia markers to win. The Sox also used pitchers Bob Mahoney, Lou Kretlow and Marv Rotblatt. Shantz, who won eight and lost 14 last year, previously had been beaten, 6 to 1, by Conrado Marrero and the Washington Senators, and 3 to 0 by Ed Lopat and the Yankees. He hurt his arm against Boston April 29 when the Athletics bowed 12 to 8. Gus Zernial, sent from the White Sox to the Athletics in a trade last week, found all offerings by his former teammates pret- ty good and collected three singles in five times at bat. The score by innings: R. H. E. Athletics 420 030 000—9 13 0 White Sox 011 100 010—4 12 0 Shantz 1-2 and Astroth; Littlefield, Brown 1, Mahoney 5, Kretlow 8, Rotblatt 9 and Niarhos, Masi 9. Losing pitcher, Littlefield 0-1. Home runs — Joost fourth, Fain first.
