Bold Makes First Start of Season Victory Today Would Earn Preakness Starting Berth For Brookmeade Sophomore PIMLICO, Baltimore, Md., May 8. — Brookmeade Stables Bold, a three-year- % old son of By Jimminy and Little Rebel, and the sophomore most likely to represent Mrs. Dodge Sloane in the May 19th Dia- i mond Jubilee running of the 5,000 added Preakness, launches his 1951 campaign 1 tomorrow afternoon in the mile and a sixteenth Jacobus Purse. During a three-race : juvenile season, Bold was the winner of a conditioning race which was his first start, was second to Big Stretch in the Pimlico Futurity, then won Bowies Endurance Handicap, only to be disqualified and placed second behind Bob Considine. A victory for Bold in the Jacobus would prove practically nothing insofar as impending engagements are concerned, but the race could serve as an excellent prep for either the Preakness or other sophomore events in the more distant future. Prior to shipping to Maryland, the good-looking colt trained satsifactorily in New York and reports say he is fit and ready for a top effort at first asking. Mediocre Opposition Opposition in the Jacobus is far below stake caliber, comprising of the following members of the age division: G. A. Sacks Rare Knave, Dion K. Kerr, Jrs, Broken Lens, Mrs. H. K. Hickeys Trimship, Pelican Stables Dependable, J. T. Gibsons Trout Lure, Mrs. A. C. Pauls Sir Ridgewell and the R. H. Abercrombie tandem of Like You and Sliparound. While the appearance of Bold in the Jacobus is the highlight of a well-balanced program, the best race carded from a competitive standpoint is the six-furlong fifth event, a dash for seasoned sprinters. Entered in this ,500 event are Richard E. Carters Oriole, W. Taylor Leatherburys Eastern Flyway, Mrs. D. N. Lees Remembrance, Winlochan Stables Adopt and the coupling of A. J. Wilsons Arthur Pilate and E. A. Nicodemus Laran. Oriole has been the hard-luck horse of the Maryland spring season, and his ability to get into trouble, plus his inability to grace the winners circle, has caused his owner and trainer considerable wory. Even with an abundance of trouble in his last, the Swing and Sway gelding was beaten only two lengths by Solicitor in 1:12%. Just a nose behind Oriole in that race was Laran, who has failed to display the form this season that he has shown in previous campaigns. His stablemate, Arthur Pilate, made his seasonal debut several days back at this meting and was beaten but a head by Puppet. Eastern Flyway has shown good form on occasions this spring but, like Oriole, he has been unable to earn brackets. Re- : membrance has been unimpressive in a light campaign thus far, while Adopt recently made his first start of the year at Garden State, finishing six lengths behind Pensava.
