Jet Fleet and Definitely Triumphant Tally in Jamaicas . Divided Clearview Hooper Gelding Outsprints The Reef; Brae Burn Farm Colt Nips Fanelis Alley By BOB HORWOOD Staff Correspondent JAMAICA, L. I., N. Y., May 8.— Fred W. Hoopers Jet Fleet came up a paddock "good thing," in the first division of the featured Clearview Purse at Jamaica and scored by almost a length over Mrs. Aksel Wichf elds The Reef, but with some speed to spare. Maine Chance Farms Colony Date was a little more than a length farther back, then it was 10 lengths back to William Zieglers Irritate. You had to look another length to the rear to find Sanford Stud Farms favored Northampton, who broke sluggishly, rushed into the lead, then began to fade at the final corner. Quaker Stables Bentrovato, an outsider, had speed for more than a half mile and may be worth remembering. Jet Fleet was confidently ridden by Basil James and paid .40. The time for the six furlongs was a moderate 1:12%. The second division of the Clearview was a thriller in slow motion, with Brae Burn Farms Definitely scoring by a nose over M. F. Drinkhouses Fanelis Alley after a duel that lasted the length of the stretch. Maine Chance Farms Graphic was less than a length farther back after six furlongs in 1:13%, slowest time of the day by a wide margin. Edwin Holtons Moseid was a distant fourth. Definitely paid .40 a as a close second choice to Fanelis Alley a and was ridden by Harrison N. Wilson. Well-Backed Y Horses Score j The majority in the throng of 20,939 fj fared well in the early races with the ! r Double paying a scant 4.60 and well-1 b backed horses scoring in all of the other j e events through the first division of the C Clearview, though Anchor Man and North-I a ampton proved two exceedingly dubious i c choices in the fifth and sixth races. Todays feature was a divided affair for tl three-year-olds who had never won two i n races. No longer being eligible for non-i w winners of two, it can be suspected that the : ti two winners, Jet Fleet and Definitely, will i f find j it easy to reach the winners circle in tl the near future, though the first named h has been made eligible to the Swift Stakes 1 ai and Peter Pan Handicap at Belmont Park. Bentrovato and Northampton fought for tl the lead to the stretch turn in the first half oi of the Clearview, then both ran out of w wind. The Reef, who had been laying third, J took command in the upper stretch, but Jet Fleet matched his move and took command ir. just above the eighth pole. James a] appeared to measure his rival for a few st strides, then sat snug, appearing to ease up ir in the final strides. The second half of the feature was almost ■ exclusively between Definitely and F Fanelis Alley from the start, with the favorite v setting the pace. Graphic made a tl threatening bid at the stretch turn, then I hi hung in the final drive, showing little heart fc for his work.
