Y., May 8 UP .—Hank Sauers two-run first-inning homer gave the Chicago Cubs a 2 to 1 victory over the Brooklyn Dodgers today as Lefty Bob Schultz scored his third triumph of the season. A tiny crowd of 5,118 saw the big left fielder unfurl his fifth homer of the season into the upper left field deck with Ransom Jackson, who had singled, aboard to nullify a brilliant pitching exhibition starter Carl Erskine who allowed three the four hits the Cubs obtained of him in seven innings, in the first frame. Schultz. a powerfully built left hander, held the Dodgers in check the remainder of the way although he needed a brilliant, one-handed jumping catch by Frank Baumholtz against the right field wall preserve his one-run lead in the sixth inning. Schultz had two crises — in the sixth when Baumholtzs catch saved him after singles by Cal Abrams and Gil Hodges sandwiched around a walk produced a run and in the eighth when Jacksons two-base throwing error and Duke Snider s bunt single put Dodgers on first and third with none out. Schultz pitched out of the latter jam himself by retiring Jackie Robinson on short fly, fanning Hodges and forcing Carl Furillo to pop to Jackson. The Cubs made only four hits off the combined offerings of Erskine, who suffered his third loss against one win, and Branca but grouped three in the first inning. The score by innings: R. H Cubs 200 000 000—2 4 Dodgers 000 001 000—1 9 Schultz 3-1 and Walker; Erskine, Branca 8 and Edwards. Losing pitcher, Erskine 1-3. Home run — Sauer 5.
