Apprentice Sidney Cole Signs To Ride for Belair-Wheatley AQUEDUCT, L. I., N. Y., June 26. — Trainer James Fitzsimmons has signed apprentice Sidney Cole to do the lightweight riding for the Belair-Wheatley Stables. The 103-pound, 21-year-old lad, born in Flatbush and whose father is a pharmacist now living in the Bronx, joined racing in 1948 after graduating from the Manhattan High School of Aviation Trades and served his first apprenticeship with Tony Carraci. A year later he became apprenticed to Amadee Jeanfreau, the New Orleans horseman-owner-trainer, for whom he also served as delivery boy after the close of the Pair Grounds season. Cole rode his first race at Scarborough Downs last summer and his first winner astride Jeanfreau s Cassina at the Fair Grounds, New Orleans, on November 29, 1950. He has a total of 30 winners to his credit, should maintain his present weight for many years and is now under the guid ance of Mr. Fitz, former jockey and one of the developers of Walter Millar, great riding star, as well as other good riders.
