Another nose be-: hind came James Cox Bradys Boom Boom, Cherwells running companion in the about two miles headliner. Babs Whey, ridden by Charles V. B. Cushman, Jr., carried only 137 pounds, in-: eluding a two-pound overweight, while Cherwell raced under 140 pounds and Boom Boom was laden with highweight of 162 pounds. Babs Whey rewarded his backers in the crowd of approximately 9,000 with .90 for each wager and completed the 15-jump course in 3:49%. There was a single mishap during the running, F. Ambrose Clarks Night Patrol falling heavily with Flint Schulhof er at the fourteenth and next-to-last jump. Schul-1 hofer was removed to the first aid quarters, where he was pronounced only bruised and shaken up. He was sent to the hospital as a precautionary measure. Babs Whey, winner of her last four races in 1950, but a maiden over the jumps, had received a conditioner over the course last week and raced well, finishing third while beaten less than two lengths. Cush-jT man elected to ride a waiting race in the Spring Maiden and allowed his mount to trail for about a mile and half before charging to pick up the ,100 purse. After being rated early, Boom Boom wrested command from Stephen C. Clark, Jr.s, Weather Deck soon after the first mile, while Cherwell took over the runner- up position. The two raced in that order until turning into the straightaway the final time, where Babs Whey moved to them. Boom Boom retained the lead going over the final jump, with Cherwell still second and apparently ready to engage his stablemate from the outside. Before jockey Joe Snyder could maneuver Cherwell in that fashion, Babs Whey moved from the outside, forcing Cherwells rider to take up slightly to prevent his mount from hitting Boom Boom from behind. Immediately after that, Cherwell moved between the other two and a three-horse battle devel-•1 oped, with the placing judges finding it necessary to rely on the camera.
