Cigar Maid After Third Straight Stake Victory Schiffer Miss Faces Star-Enfin, Five Others in Astoria Renewal By BOB HORWOOD Staff Correspondent AQUEDUCT, L. I., N. Y., June 26.— Jack W. Schiffers Cigar Maid, who won the Fashion Stakes and filly division of the National Stallion in her last two starts at Belmont Park, will try to make it three fixtures in a row tomorrow, when she heads a field of seven in the forty-fifth running of the 0,000 Astoria. Cigar Maid must carry the top impost of 122 pounds tomorrow, conceding three to Brae Burn Farms Star-Enfin and eight to the other five fillies in this five and a half furlongs event. Cigar Maid carried five pounds more than necessary in the National Stallion in which she was chased under the wire by two of those she meets tomorrow, Mrs. John Hertz Risque Ma and C. V. Whitneys Recess. She was drawing away at the finish of that five furlongs on the straight course with Bennie Green encouraging her mildly. Green will again be in the saddle tomorrow. Star-Enfin, who will be ridden by Eddie Arcaro, won three straight on Long Island Continued on Page Forty Cigar Maid After Third , Straight Stake Victory Schiffer Miss Faces Star-Enfin, Five Others in Astoria Renewal Continued from Page One and was rated a possible threat to Cigar Maid for juvenile filly honors until she went down to Delaware Park and was beaten by Papoose in the Polly Drummond Stakes. The track was "good" for this race and Star-Enfin failed to concede* five pounds to the winner, her effort falling short by more than a length. Risque Ma and Edward M. OBriens Isograde, of to-, morrows field, finished far behind Star-Enfin in that dash. The others in the Astoria are Recess; who came back from her defeat in the National Stallion to score easily in con- siderably faster time at Belmont; Vera S. Braggs Goddess and Russell A. Firestones Once in Love. Dave Gorman will ridg Recess, who looms particularly dangerous at the weights, particularly in view of the present good form of all of Syl Veitchs charges. Goddess showed improvement in her lasV start, finishing a scant nose behind Mae West, a repeater who is being tested in todays feature. Hedley Woodhouse will ride this daughter of Blue Swords. Once in Love and Isograde are the outsiders o* the field. The Astoria was inaugurated in 1902 when J. G. Follansbees Astarita was the winner. It was a costly experience for Follansbee as it was one of the conditions of the race at that time that the winning owner had to stage a party for all the other nominators at the old Waldorf-Astoria on Fifth Avenue. This affair lasted for three days and the tab came to con-; siderably more than the ,125 Astarita earned. The practice was discontinued after a few years. f More recently, the Astoria has gone to such fine racing fillies and/or successful producers as Maud Muller, Edith Cavell, Pandera, One Hour, Sovietta, Stage Craft, Inhale, Donita M., Now What, Tangled; Stefanita, Mrs. Ames and First Flight. Last year, the stake went to G. D. Wide-ners Sungari.
