Six Vie in Georgetown Steeplechase ELKRIDGE — The veteran steeplechaser is seeking his third straight Georgetown Handicap victory today at Delaware Park, having accounted for the two previous runnings of the event. Oedipus Gives Ten Pounds to Elkridge Last Years Champion Fencer Faces Stern Task on Stake Course at Delaware Park By PALMER HEAGERTY Staff Correspondent DELAWARE PARK, Stanton, Del., June 26. — Kent Millers Elkridge, the worlds leading money-winning steeplechase thoroughbred with gleanings of 27,555, returns to his "happy hunting grounds" tomorrow afternoon to compete in the thirteenth running of the Georgetown Handicap. This about two-mile event Is over the exacting stakes course, which includes 12 difficult obstacles. The 13-year-old son of Mate — Best by Test, who was bred by Delaware Parks steward, Joseph F. Flanagan, will be seeking his thirty-second victory in 116 starts and for the test has been assigned 148 pounds, which finds him in receipt of 10 pounds from Mrs. Ogden Phipps Oedipus. Rounding out the small field wil be F. Ambrose Clarks Lone Fisherman, 147; Lowry Watkins Tourist List, 142, and the Rokeby Stable tandem of Genancoke, 137, and Crooning Wind, 130 pounds. Elkridge, who has covered 260 miles, six and a half furlongs and 70 yards during his extensive campaigning has, for the past two seasons, swept the Delaware Park combination of Georgetown and Indian River handicaps, and boasts a quintet of victories in the latter event. Smithwick Rides Elkridge While his current campaign has not been marked by a victory in three starts, Elkirdge has displayed his usual speed and fencing ability, finishing twice second and once third. In his last race he was beaten slightly more than seven lengths while third to Titien II. and Lone Fisherman in the Corinthian. He drops two pounds off that effort and will have the services of the capable Pat Smithwick, who rode him in his 1949 conquests. Oedipus, a five-year-old Blue Larkspur gelding, was last years steeplechase "Horse of the Year" in the poll conducted by Daily Racing Form. During his 15-race campaign he won five races, including the Aqueduct Spring Maiden, Shellelah, Broad Hollow and Brook handicaps. This year he has started but twice, finishing second in his debut and winning the Corinthian. He will be ridden by James Smiley. Lone Fisherman boasts a stakes victory this season, having won the Jervis Spencer at Pimlico, and has not been worse than second in four starts. The Annapolis gelding was second to Oedipus in the Corinthian, which was his most recent engagement. Won Temple Gwathmey Tourist List has raced but once this year, finishing fourth in the Corinthian. During 1950 he raced but eight times and his lone victory came in the Temple Gwathmey Handicap. Genancoke was the winner of the 1947 Georgetown but has failed to display comparable form this season, winning but a single race in overnight competition. Crooning Wind hasnt won in the past two years. Supporting race on the mid-week card is the fifth and final running in the Mont-chanin Handicap Series and will be at the mile and six furlongs distance for a ,500 purse. The leader with 36 points is Loran, who was not named to compete tomorrow, her handlers feeling that the distance was beyond her capabilities. Heading tomorrows field is the Keystone Stable entry of Tus One, who has 24 points, and Cer Vantes, with 12 points. Others named, with their point earnings are: Margaret MacCallums Jitters, 27; H. W. Finchers Quamedito, 24; Phil Leydeck-ers Fifty-Five, 18, and Richard Carters Snowflares, who has not scored a point. The leading point-scorer following tomorrows running will receive a bonus of ,500, with the second horse receiving 00, the third horse 00 and the fourth horse 00.
