, Ballydam Outruns Miche in Surprise Mrs. Toffels Irish-Bred Colt Under Hard Drive to Win Woodlawn at Arlington ARLINGTON PARK, Arlington Heights, 111., June 26. — An Irish-bred colt by way of Lawrence, Long Island, Mrs. Hattie Toffels Ballydam, shocked most of a large off-day crowd at Arlington Park this sunny afternoon when he raced to a hard earned tally in the six furlongs of the featured Wood-lawn Purse. Responding to a hand ride by Harold Allgaier, the chestnut four-year-old son of Ballyogan reached the finish half a length in advance of Mrs. John Payson Adams Miche, a California stakes winner making his first appearance before a Chicago audience. The gray stallion from the Argentine was some lengths in advance of K. G. Marshalls Coffee Money, another Irishman, and Shady Brooks Clevelander, another gray, was a rather distant fourth in a field of nine that included several candidates for rich local stakes. Ran Eleventh in Myrtlewood Ballydam had run an abject eleventh in the Myrtlewood opening day, but picked up level weights with Miche, at 122 pounds apiece, and turned in one of his good performances this afternoon. He went over the distance in the lively time of 1:10% and returned his backers 4.80 for in the tote. The crowd installed Miche an odds-on favorite and he gave it the old school try, gained slowly on the winner all the last furlong, but couldnt bring him down. Despite threatening weather during morning hours, a crowd of 10,360 turned out for the afternoons sport. Only one favorite was successful through the decision of the feature, but the play was brisk. The Woodlawn not only marked Miche s first Chicago appearance, but the first for Coffee Money since Hialeah, and the first for Volcanic, the turf champion, since last October. Ballydam was always the aggressor in the Woodlawn. He was never far away, while Visional tried to win from the drop of the flag under her light weight. When she began to tire on the turn, he struck on the outside, went into a clear lead briefly, and had too much left when Miche got to him inside the final furlong. Miche never was far back while waiting over the early furlongs and made a hard run under the whip. Coffee Money pegged the pace close up from the start, saved ground on the turn and held on very well for a first-out performance. The others did nothing very much to add to the race as a spectacle, Calumets Easy Lad went off the an odds -on chance in the six furlongs of the fifth, which brought together eight maiden three-year-olds, but Woolford Farms Be- seech won and returned 07.80. Charles Martin brought her to the stand a length in front of W. Burkes Deal Me In as the latter beat the disappointing Easy Lad a head for the place. Another nose back Winning Fleet was fourth in a blanket finish for the minor awards. Beseech found her way into the lead soon after the start, was rated along to the stretch, and when Deal Me In and Easy Lad charged on her, had plenty left and won by her own length in 1:11%. Deal Me In and Easy Lad were well placed and fin-■ ished strongly but not fast enough. Easy Lad began his drive at the top of the stretch and had running room all the way. M. H. VanBergs Left Bank, and W. H. Bishops Timus brought the crowd to their feet in the six furlongs of the fourth when they came to the finish on the same stride. The placing judges studied the photo for what must have seemed several years to those who had made Left Bank the favorite, and then posted a dead heat. Vinina was third for Johnny Bell, a length and a half back. Left Bank returned .80. Timus, .40. Johnny Adams had the mount on Left Bank, Harold Keene strengthening his hold on leading riding honors with another winner wtih Timus. These were ,000 horses and several of them alternated in brief leads over the early furlongs. Left Bank saved ground on the rail while Prince of Evil went to the far corner on the lead, with Hurricane and Bridge prompting him. Bridge disposed of Prince of Evil and Hurricane on the turn, opened up about a length and a half, but hadnt anything left when Left Bank moved up to challenge on the inside about the three-sixteenths pole. Left Bank no sooner got to the front than Timus drove up out-r, side him the final yards, but he hung on long enough to split the purse. The time was 1:12%. Mrs. Thelma Otts Sephora was grad- uated from the ranks of non-winners in the six furlongs first race when she drove home three-quarters of a length before My-Well Acres Farms Curious Reward as Urbanite was a close third in the field of 11 three- year-olds. Sephora was overlooked in the wagering to return 5.60 and when J. J. Lombardos Devil Dust, another outsider, , accounted for the second race, a Daily Double worth 04.80 was posted. Devil . Dust paid 8.60. Devil Dust surprised the crowd by coming from last place to earn a neck verdict over W. H. Bishops Mescara at the end of the • , . • mile test. Whose was a fast -finishing third 1 ■ for Mrs. K. Mayer. Apprentice Harry Schab was astride the j second winner of his career when he piloted I Mrs. Harry Trotseks Bill Boy to a front-running . and handy tally in the third race. This was a dash of five and a half furlongs j | for juveniles. Both of Schabs victories 1 were registered on Bill Boy, the first having been scored at Keeneland. J. J. Nolans I Ruddy Belle was two and a half lengths 5 back of the winner in a tight fit for that t I position with Mrs. H. J. Damms Scene One.
