Whirla Whirla Lea Lea Triumphs Triumphs Under Under Drive; Drive; Armageddon Armageddon in in Good Good Belmont Belmont Trial Trial Peter Pan Winner Goes Six Furlongs Timed in 1:13% Over Sloppy Strip for-Tomorrows Race; Sub Fleet Works Slow Mile By BOB nORWOOD Stall Correspondent BELMONT PARK, Elmont, L. I., June 5. — Cain Hoy Stables Armageddon and Dixi-anas Sub Fleet, the two colts who are expected to prove the chief rivals to White Oak Stables Blue Man in Saturdays eighty-fourth Belmont Stakes, were ceen in training moves this morning. Of the two, Armageddon was considerably the more impressive as he reeled off six furlongs in 1:13%, working alone on the main track, which was sloppy. The Alsab colt appears indifferent to track conditions, so long as the track is Belmont Park. Sub Fleet came out on the slower training track and went a slow mile that told very little. The colt was timed in :53% for the half, six furlongs in 1:19%, mile in 1:48%, then was eased up a mile and a furlong in 2:03%. The work was about what could have been expected of a good steeplechaser. However, the Count Fleet colt put in a solid seven furlongs on Saturday when finishing a neck back of Heap Big Chief in fast time. Master Fiddles Prep Not Encouraging There were still a couple of question marks in connection with the starting field for Saturdays 00,000-added mile and a half run this morning. Myhelyn Stables Master Fiddle, who turned in a dull race in the Peter Pan on Saturday and has appeared decidedly sore for a couple of weeks, came out on the Jamaica strip and stepped six "furlongs in 1:17. The gray colts prep was not encouraging. It had been thought that he might be replaced by Jack Amiels Count Flame, but that colt is entered in a six-furlohg race tomorrow. Belair Studs Golden Gloves, who fought it out with Armageddon in a sizzling pace duel for a mile and a sixteenth of the nine furlongs of last Saturdays Peter Pan, also went a slow six furlongs in 1:17 at Aqueduct this morning. The Isolater colt picks up considerable weight in the Belmont and was tiring at the end of the shorter race, Continued on Page Ten Armageddon Works Well For Belmont Engagement Goes Six Furlongs in l:13s on Sloppy Strip; Sub Fleet Drills Continued from Page One but is showing rapid improvement. Trainer Jim Fitzsimmons has been seeking the services of Ted Atkinson, who has been engaged to ride Fred W. Hoopers Olympic. Ivan Parke has been delaying a final decision concerning Olympic, who has been training well since his disappointing fourth in the Peter Pan. Later in the day, "Mr. Pitz" said that he would probably ride Nick Wall on Golden Gloves, though-it was not quite as certain as death or taxes. The other probables in this edition of Americas premier event for three-year-olds are Colonel Isidor Biebers King Jolie, winner of his last four starts, two of them at Belmont, two at Garden State Park, and Mrs. Walter M. Jeffords One Count, bringing the probable field to seven. There is an outside chance that Apheim Stable will pay the ,000 starting fee for Quiet Step, who made a powerful, but premature, move in the Peter Pan. Had that same bid been: made at the quarter pole, rather than just inside the half mile pole, the Some Chance colt might have been very much in the picture at the finish. At this moment, Blue Man shapes up as a solid choice at not more than even money, with Armageddon second choice at slightly better than 2 to 1 with Sub Fleet almost as welL regarded. There will also be some support for One Count, if only because of Eddie Arcaros presence in the saddle. Blue Man was favored over Sub Fleet in the Preakness, despite finishing some eight lengths behind the Dixiana colt in the Derby, and though he has not raced since galloping off with the Pimlico classic, his training has been excellent. An analysis of Armageddons victory in the Peter Pan and Sub Fleets close second in the seven-furlong Commando Purse, gives the former a decided edge, even granting that Sub Fleet was not asked for the last ounce of finishing power. The longer Peter Pan was a faster race all the way. Conn McCreary will again ride Blue Man, while Ray York will guide Armageddon, Steve Brooks will be on Sub Fleet. Eric Guerin, who was to have ridden King Jolie, has to ride Home-Made for Alfred G. Vanderbilt at Delaware Park, Stout may come up to ride the colt. Ivan Parke could not be reached at a late hour this afternoon for a definite statement concerning Olympic, which left Atkinson close to Jacobs in that quandary. It seems possible that they will get together. Dave Gorman will be on Master Fiddle. Ted Atkinson will pilot either Olympic or Golden Gloves.
