BETWEEN RACES By Oscar Otisl HOLLYWOOD PARK, Inglewood, Calif./ June 5. — William Goetz is en route to Europe, but before he left he told this writer that he would return in time to personally be present at his dispersal sale, which formally has been scheduled in the Hollywood Park paddock at 3 oclock on the afternoon of Monday, June 30. Goetz remarked that press of personal business had made it necessary for him to devote his full time to the motion pic- ture and television business, hence the reason for the dispersal. "Press of personal business" can cover a multitude of reasons, but in the case of Goetz it is quite urgent. The motion picture business has been in "ill health" for some time, and the man is in the midst of a tremendous deal to convert Universal Studios into a 100 per cent television operation. To meet the demands of the new medium, Goetz will be working a good 16 hours a day for the next few years, and it can be added that the conversion of Universal from theatre to TV productions will mark a real milestone for Hollywood. Fastig-Tipton will handle the dispersal, with Humphrey Finney and George Swine-broad presiding. The vendue will see 1and horses go under the hammer. AAA The Hollywood Park dispersal will find the entire racing stable on the block, including the four-year-olds Gold Note and Grantor, the three-year-olds Quick Wink and Your Hostess, the two-year-olds Bedizened, Big Hit, Cornerstone, Helenus, Julep Cup, Tittle Tattle and Upkeep; three yearlings: a chestnut colt by Khaled — Miss Barbara; a chestnut colt by Thumbs Up — Girl in Armor, a bay filly by Thumbs Up — Mum-sie; the two broodmares, Miss Barbara in foal to Khaled and Within Bounds in foal to Solidarity and two sucklings, a filly by Khaled — Miss Barbara, and a filly by Fair Truckle — Within Bounds. The sucklings will be sold as a package with the mares. Three of the two -year-olds, Bedizened, Helenus, and Tittle Tattle were choice Goetz purchases- from the Keeneland sales of last July, Bedizened being by Royal Gem H., Hellenus by Priam U., and Tittle Tattle by Roman. Cornerstone is by Alibhai * TV Transition Forces Goetz Sale Dispersal at Hollywood on June 30 Fine Sportsman Member of HBP A Fill-In on Portland Turf Star — Jerrybuilt, thus being a full brother to the great California-bred racer and now one of its most promising sire prospects, Solidarity, and the Gold Cup contender Conversion. While the two-year-olds are mostly as yet either unraced or lightly raced, there is no doubt that Quick Wink as a three-year-old is a really - superior horse. He has been turned out for a spell. All the horses except the broodmares are available for. inspection in the Hollywood Park stable area, and the broodmares and sucklings will be on hand about a week before the sale. A A A The influence of Goetz upon American racing has been great, and upon the turf in California profound. His racing stable was well balanced and hard-hitting and came into national prominence through the exploits of Your Host. Kentuckians tell us they never saw a more impressive performance than Your Host delivered in the Scarlet Gate at Keeneland. The only poor race the horse ever turned in was in the Kentucky Derby, and we have reason to believe that his failure as a favorite in the Derby was due to circumstances beyond the control of either the horse or his trainer, Harry Daniels.- Of course, Goetz no longer has any connection with Your Host, who currently is standing at the Canoga Park Farm of George W. Stratton. However, whenever the name of Your Host is mentioned, Bill Goetz comes to mind, and vice versa. His connection with racing brought nothing but credit to himself as a fine sportsman and to the sport itself. He will be missed, you can be assured, and horse people everywhere tell me they hope that when he has solved the difficult transition of Universal from theatre to television production, he again will have the needed time to enjoy himself again as an owner. It might be added that Goetz took his responsibilities as an owner seriously, and last summer he was an active member of the HBPA committee which settled its differences with Hollywood Park over purses in a gentlemanly manner, an action which did much to the prestige of the California division of the HBPA as a mature ►organization and which also spared the California turf the anguish of bitterness in the solution of what turned out to be only a minor difference of opinion. j AAA Jack F. Mackenzie, vice-president and general manager of Hollywood Park, kindly fills us in on some more interesting background of the spring sensation of the Northwest, Black Zida. This remarkable mare is scheduled to go postward Saturday in the ,000 Portland Handicap at Portland Meadows. She has, as you may recall, two track record performances in her three straight wins at the Columbia River course. It develops that Black Zida was bred by W. P. Bowen, a nephew of the Mackenzies who lives near Fresno. Bowen owns Black Legion, the sire, and Be Zida, the mare. When -the man was away in service at Okinawa, he had an idea that Be Zida might nick with Top Row, and Mackenzie made the arrangements. This resulting colt was Barsard, a popular sprint hero and winner of handicaps up and down the coast. Black Zida was foaled and grew up on a 20-acre ranch near Fresno, a ranch which has since been subdivided to housing. Bowen is in the real estate business in the valley city, but still keeps the stud and a few mares, and as such is Fresno Countys leading breeder, Fresno not being in the "horse country" of California, but rather is more noted for grapes, raisens and cotton. Black Zilda seems to pretty well prove the point that good horses can come from most anywhere, a theory to which Californians are the most wholehearted subscribers. AAA Horses and People: Speaking about subdivisions, the swankiest one in all northern Mexico is being developed-on the hill overlooking the Caliente race track near Tijuana Unbelievable, the full brother of Citation, graduated from the maiden ranks on his fifth try here earlier in the week, which has led wags to remark that Citations full brother reminds them greatly of Citation because he is so different. Jimmy Jones tells us he long ago gave up any hope of Unbelievable developing into a stake horse, but he seems destined to be at least a useful sort of horse. He won at a mile in convincing fashion, but from unconvincing company and in unimpressive time. . .Cali-entes .annual Powder Puff Derby is down for decision a week from Sunday.
