Alerted Now Definite Massachusetts Starter Will Arrive at Suffolk Monday From Belmont for 5,000 Race SUFFOLK DOWNS, East Boston, Mass., June 5*— Alerted, one of the nations top handicap stars, is a definite starter in the 18th running of the famed 5,000 added Massachusetts Handicap next Wednesday. The four-year-old Bull Lea colt, who is owned by Frank Stout, a Maiden automobile agency owner, will arrive at Suffolk Downs Monday from Belmont Park for the big event. Alerted, one of the most campaigned handicap thoroughbreds in racing, seems to thrive on competition. He goes any disr tance at any track and is generally right up there. In 13 starts this year, he has won four races, been second four times and showed twice to earn 3,075. This sum together with earnings of 01,285 last year makes Alerted a profitable purchase. He was acquired from Calumet Farm at private terms two years ago. Prior to last Fridays Suburban Handicap in New York where Alerted ran fifth after being up with the pace most of the way, the pride of the Stout Stable had won three, had four seconds and a third in .eight starts. Included in his triumphs were the 0,000 added Thomas J. Healey Handicap at Garden State on May 24; the 0,000 added Dixie Handicap atPimlico on May 3 and the 0,000 Appleton Memorial Handicap at Gulfstream on March 22. In the Gallant Fox Cap he chased Spartan Valor home. Last year he hooked up in three three-year-old duels with the highly regarded Battlefield. First Battlefield beat Alerted by a nose after the stretch thriller in the Shevlin Stakes and then won again by a half length after another tough tussle in the Dwyer Stakes. • Alerted came back to beat Battlefield by a head in the Discovery Handicap. Alerted has run only once at Suffolk Downs and that was in the Yankee Handicap last year when he ran second to Out Point.
