" Lay ne- Matthews Return Bout Pact Stymies Ring Promoters , . : ; i 1 : i ■ l ■ Olson Given Nod Over Beau * In Television Ten-Rounder At Madison Garden Tonight By BARNEY NAGLER Staff Correspondent PHILADELPHIA, Pa., June 5. — The project of lining up a million-dollar rival for the survivor of tonights heavyweight championship test between Jersey Joe Wal-cott and Ezzard Charles was stymied here today by 1 promoter Jim Norris toothache, and 2, a contract held by Rex Layne, butterball Utah entry, for a return bout with Harry "Kid" Matthews. Norris had hoped to close the projected meeting of Matthews and unbeaten Rocky Marciano, penciled in for the Polo Grounds on July 14, 21 or 28, but Laynes. agent, Marv Jenson, arrived on the scene to throw negotiations off. Jensons fighter was whipped by Matthews in a close, hard fight some weeks ago out West: Before the fight was made, howeyer, Matthews agent, Jack Hurley, signed a contract for a return within 60 days, in compliance with a demand by Jen-son. It is this contract which Jenson is waving in the skinny, pasty face of Jack Hurley, and the pain-swollen jaw of promoter Norris. Both Hurley and Al Weill, who talks for his son, Marty, Marcianos manager, when it comes to making matches for Rocky, are down here, but the negotiations are stymied. Expected to Be Straightened Out Likely as not, however, all will be straightened out. Jenson has always played ball with Norris and the International Boxing Club. Certainly, he proved this two years ago when he brought in Layne, then a mere upstart, for a New York bow against Walcott. Layne took Jenson off the spot by upsetting .Walcott, whose future was bleak indeed then and there. However, Layne never again hit the peak achieved against Old Joe. His low point was reached last! July, when. Marciano knocked him out in six rounds in Madison Square Garden. Norris pain in the jaw isnt the only sour note down here. The IBC has a bout slated for the Garden tomorrow night — Carl "Bobo" Olson, Hawaii middleweight, and Jimmy Beau, the Connecticut kid who has never quite lived up to promise displayed in, earlier days. The Garden bout has been overshadowed by Walcott-Charles. Attendance, which could dip to 2,000, would set a seasons, low for the IBC. However, theres a bright side to it all. Olson might well qualify for future Garden bouts by taking care of Beau. He is the favorite. Olsons best effort this far came in a 15-round middleweight title fight some time ago with Sugar Ray Robinson. That one, in San Francisco, was close until a stretch drive by Sugar Ray fended off Olsons bid. Its too badthat Olson, and Beau will be fighting in an empty studio. It adds up to a struggle, with Olson picked to beat Beau because he is classier. His only other bout in New York, at the Eastern Parkway Arena some weeks ago, brought him a TKO over Walter Cartieri who was knocked down so fiercely he suffered an ankle in- jury and had to beg off. The bout will be on television at 10 p. m. EDT. Why, of course, why else would it be going on?
