— 1 1 - — — Fred R. Overtakes Jeannie C. In Drive for Delaware Score Forced to Swing to Outside When Pacemaker Comes Over in Front of Him on Rail By FRED GALIANI Staff Correspondent DELAWARE PARK, Stanton, Del., June 5. — Savoy Stables Fred R. captured the featured Concordville Purse here today by a length over A. T. Clarkes Jeannie C, but jockey George Hettinger had to take up oil the winner in the stretch run and come to the outside when the pace-making filly came over in front of him on the rail. Jeannie C. was far in front throughout most of the race, but was coming back to her field through the drive. Two and a half lengths back in third place was Mrs. A. Roberts Cobber, who came from the ruck, while S. Stecklers Decapolis was fourth. Fred R. was the favorite with the estimated crowd of 10,000 that turned out on a warm and slightly hazy day and returned .30 on the win end. His time for the six furlongs was 1:12% .over the good track. This was the second favorite of the day to win, the odd-on Two Rainbows winning the co-featured fifth race. This was the second score in a row for the Savoy Stable three-year-old and his third in eight starts, all of his victories coming in this area. He had won twice at the recent Garden State meeting. He has never been out of the allowance category, while the defeated Jeannie C. had been the victress in the Havre De Grace Breeders Stakes. , Clarke Filly Opens Long Lead The Clarke filly, who boasts tremendous speed but seldom carries it to the end of her racces, came out in her usual fashion and opened up a long lead, while Fred R. was right behind her and before Decapolis. Referee and Knights Reward, neither of whom were to figure in the race, came next with Cobber bringing up the rear. The flying Jeannie C. continued to lead around the turns and into the stretch, but Fred R. was moving in on her and cutting down the lead. Bobby Mitchell, carrying his whip in his left hand, brought the filly over to the rail, impeding Fred R.s flight, and Hettinger had to take up and bring the colt to the outside. That maneuver completed, Fred R. went on to sweep past the filly and win by a comfortable margin. Cobber, who had traield until the eighth pole, moved up for the third money. It was a close call for backers of Brook -meade Stables odds-on Two Rainbows in the fifth race, the Townsend Purse, as the choice eked out a head victory over Mrs. Henry S. Clarks Puppet in the six-furlong dash. Mrs. Chester Lyons Penocci who pushed the favorite practically the entire distance, was three-quarters of a length back in third place and the same distance before A. T. Clarkes King Mowlee, the last horse in the race. Two Rainbows completed a double for apprentice Paul Ward and the four-year-old filly returned .80. The time for the race was 1 : 12% over a track termed good. Penocc and Two Rainbows sped out of the gate like a team, with a good gap separating them fr§m King Mowlee and Puppet, who comprised a similar tandem farther back. Penocc, on the inside, made Two Rainbows step to keep up and they went head and head down the backstretch and around the turn. Two Rainbows got the better of Penocc in the stretch but is was a slow process, and probably an agonizing one, and then withstood the late bid of Puppet. Two Rainbows had been beaten a nose over a muddy strip last Saturday but won previously to that. This was his second soce in five starts.
