Fans to Start Selecting All-Star Players Today Annual Major League Classic Slated at Shibe Park July 8 By NORMAN MILLER United Press Sports Writer , NEW YORK, N. Y., June 5.— Baseball . fans throughout the nation begin voting : o: Friday for 16 of the players who" will start in the annual major league AllrStar ; game at Shibe Park, Philadelphia, July 8. From the large major league cities to the i tiny towns in the hinterlands, a fan poll conducted by newspapers, radio stations 1 and magazines will select the eight starting players for each team, exclusive of the : pitchers. Net proceeds from the All-Star game will i go to the baseball players annuity and insurance ■ plan the pension fund, which l was enriched more than 20,000 last year by the National leagues 8-3 victory over the American at Briggs Stadium in Detroit. ■ Of the 18 games that have been played since the classic was started in 1933, the American league has won 12, although the National came out on top in the past two contests. The fan poll will close on midnight, Friday, June 27, and the complete results of the vote for each of the eight starting positions will be announced June 29. Within a few days after that, the managers of the rival teams will choose the pitching staffs and reserves to round out their 25-man squads. .As managers of the 1951 pennant-winning teams, Casey Stengel of the Yankees will pilot the American league and Leo Durocher of the Giants will guide the National. Other conditions for the game will be the same as those of the past few years, according to a memorandum released today by baseball commissioner, Ford C. Frick. Except for the pitchers, the starting players of each team will remain in the game at least three innings, unless an injury necessitates a chance. The only restriction on a manager is that no pitcher will remain in the game longer than three innings, unless the game goes into extra innings. In that case, the pitcher in the game at the end of the ninth inning may be kept in the game indefinitely, at the discretion of the manager. In case of sickness or injury after squads have been announced, a substitute may be chosen by either manager, with the approval of his league president.
