Whirla Whirla Lea Lea Triumphs Triumphs Under Under Drive; Drive; Armageddon Armageddon in in Good Good Belmont Belmont Trial Trial Bloom Runner-Up To Winters Filly Whirlaways Daughter Timed Fastest Three-Quarters of Lincoln Meet at Hawthorne By J. J. MURPHY HAWTHORNE, Cicero, 111., June 5.— Whirla Lea, a daughter of Whirlaway — Ore-The-Lea, who races in the silks of C. W. Winters, of Milan, Ind., ran the fastest six furlongs of the meeting in winning the Dick Welles Purse here today. The fillys time for the distance was 1:10% and she won by a half length from Mrs. Louis J. Hermanns Bloom, while P. Holtons Jo Pilot was third three lengths back of the latter. The successfuLmlss, who was ridden by jockey Johnny Adams, was a heavily played favorite and paid .60. The Dick Welles was contested by a field of seven three-year-olds and Whirla Lea did not loom as a very strong possibility in the early running, although Adams had her under restraint. Gala Fete, the second choice, who had won his only start of the year at Churchill Downs, set out to make the pace with Bloom in close attendance and Jo Pilot not far away and racing on, the. outside. Gala Fete and Bloom rounded the far turn head and head and nearing the stretch turn Bloom showed in front with Jo Pilot moving up. Jo Pilot Races to Middle of Track Rounding the stretch bend the complexion of the contest changed considerably when Jo Pilot raced to the middle of the track. Gala Fete began to show signs of fatigue, and Whirla Lea moved to find an opening on the inside. At the eighth pole it was still Bloom in front, but Whirla Lea was gaining steadily next the rail. In the last sixteenth Bloom made a determined stand, but Whirla Lea was too good and flashed under the wire in front and with Adams doing his best. The race marked the ninth start of the year for Whirla Lea, who was purchased as a yearling from the "Calumet Farm. In her last start Whirla Lea was second to the star Calumet filly, Real Delight, in the Kentucky Oaks and prior to that she had been a winner at both Gulfstream Park and Hialeah. She carried 109 pounds and her next engagement will be in the Cleopatra Stakes, opening day feature a]fc Arlington Park. Bloom, who turned in a good effort won a claiming race in a previous outing at this track, while Jo Pilot, who scored four times in six starts last year, was going postward for the first time this season. Jockey Skoronski rode his second winner when he had the California-bred two-year-old, Que-Le-Hace,. up in time to trim Sudura had the most early foot and outran the field to the final sixteenth where she was headedby the winner. Captain Carver, the short-priced favorite, was unable to do better than take third money. Que-Le-Hace was making his third start here. Penaction, a Pensive colt who went post-wash twice at Waterford Downs last season without success and who had started once this year, looked very good in graduating from the maiden ranks in the six-furlong fourth race. A field of 12 tried for the honors and Penaction, owned by Mrs. F. D. Stelzig and ridden by John Heck-mann, away from his rivals, to win by seven lengths, while Bombuster and Coal Heat were battling it out for second place. Pen-action was an outsider. White Brand, from the William Hal Bishop stable, edged out the favored Mat-tafor in the fifth. The distance was one and one-sixteenth miles, and after Matta-for had made the pace to the stretch White Brand moved up on the outside to catch him an eighth out. It was a nip and tuck tussle all through the final, eighth, with White Brand gaining a head decision. Steve Brooks was the winning rider.
