Cubs Take Measure of Giants, 3 to 1 Miksis Hits Homer " To Provide Margin Minner Ends Lifetime Jinx By Defeating New Yorkers First Time in Three Years By the United Press Lefty Paul Minner broke a lifetime jinx of the New York Giants, holding the Leo Durocher crew to seven hits as the Chicago Cubs won a 3 to 1 decision before 18,494 ladies day fans at Wrigley Field yesterday. It was his first win over New York in three major league seasons. Previously, the , Giants had Beaten him seven times, including one previous triumph by a 4 to 2 margin this year, as Wes Westrum clubbed a home run with a man aboard for the winning runs. Yesterday, Westrum collected another homer, his eighth of the year, for the only Giant score. But Eddie Miksis retaliated with a four bagger for the Cubs in the seventh inning with Gene Hermanski on base *to provide the winner markers. It was Miksis first homer of the year and his first hit in last 21 times at bat. Fondy Scores First Run The first Cub run tallied in the second when John Pramesa and Dee Fondy singled. Roy Smalley forced Pramesa, but Hermanski singled to advance both runners and Fondy counted on Minner s infield out. Minner won his fif yti victory of the campaign against one defeat. He walked only two men, struck out three and over the first six innings gave up only three hits. It was his fourth complete game in eight appearances this year. Dave Koslo went the distance for the Giants for the third time and suffered his third defeat against two wins. He gave up only eight hits, struck out six and walked none. The victory gave the Cubs the series, two games to one, and squared the record between the clubs for the season at four games each. Chicago remained in third place, but advanced to two and one-half games behind the runner-up Giants.. Score by innings: R. H. E.
