Thirteen Fast Trotters In Rich Maywood Derby Silver Faith, Clipper Hanover and Johnny Brown Are Big Trio in Race MAYWOOD PARK, Maywood 111., June 5. — A field of 13 fast trotters has been named to start tomorrow night in the third renewal of the Maywood Trotting Derby at Maywood Park, first major harness racing I stake of the season in the middlewest. The derby will be decided in the sixth and ninth races, both at one mile, and will carry a record purse of 1,950, richest stake offered for trotters in the Chicago area. Early season performances have produced no overwhelming Derby favorite. Silver Faith, owned by Dr. H. B. Buter-baugh of Indiana, Pa., ranks as a slight overnight choice off her brilliant 1951 record of 21 victories in 33 starts. Silver Faith recorded one major triumph at Santa Anita early this spring and finished second and third in two warm-up appearances at May-wood. The eight-year-old mare by Silver King will be driven by Buck Minniear and will have the advantage of starting from the pole position in both dashes. Most local sentiment is divided between Clipper Hanover and Johnny Brown, the two trotters who have dominated pre-Derby tests at Maywood. Clipper Hanover has won three of six starts at the West side half-miler and will be coupled with Clever Sunny as the entry of A. D. Knapp of Jackson, Mich. Clever Sunny finished second and third in the two dashes of last years classic, but so far has failed to show his 1951 form. Bob Parkinson will drive Clipper Hanover and his brother Fred- will guide Clever Sunny. Johnny Brown, owned by Paul S. Dougherty of LaGrange, is conceded the best chance to give the Chicago area its first -Derby winner. The eight-year-old Tryax gelding has captured four of five starts, including two triumphs in the mud over both Clipper Hanover and Silver Faith. Completing the field are Gene Long, dash winner of the 1950 Derby; Buckie B., Moses, Spud Hart, and Delhi Lady, Colby White, Sidney Guy, Shawnee Hanover, and John Dee. The latter five will be grouped as the field entry for mutuel purposes. Dee Stover, leading driver at the meeting, will be in Delhi Ladys sulky. His closest competitor, Red Scott, will handle Spud Hart. A Maywood record for the trotted mile was established in the 1951 Derby when Rose Song won the first dash in 2:04% and Lord Steward matched that time in the second mile. Silver Faith, Clipper Hanover, and Johnny Brown are conceded an outside chance to better that mark if per-I feet racing conditions prevail.
