L. I . N. Y., May 15. — Alfred G. Vanderbilt/s Native Dancer returns to action on the New York scene, where the" gray colt has never been defeated, ..tomorrow, in the seventy-eighth runnin©-ofc the 5,000 Withers Mile. The son of Polynesian is expected to keep his local recdTti--unblemished, if only because io hofeesJiandW been named to oppose Native Dancer and his stablemate. Social Outcast. Saxon Stables Invigorator, and Mrs. George F. Spears Real Brother are the two entered to oppose the entry, which will probably go posfeward at the minimum •of 1 to 20. There had been some thought that Ben- F. Whitakers Tahitian King, who .woTr4he- Swift Stakes last out and chased Native-Daneer in the Wood Memorial, Futurity and other stakes, would try again tomorrow, but this Polynesian colt will await-tfnottter day. NATIVE DANCER, with exercise rider, Bernie Everson up, and trainer Bill Winfrey, on pony, out for recent morning gallop in preparation for his engagement in todays Withers Stakes at the Belmont Park course. Native Dancer Seeking Withers Today j ♦ Over Two Rivals and His Stablemate Invigorator, Real Brother t » Compete With Vanderbilts Gray Colt, Social Outcast Continued from Page One 3 to 20 over three rivals in the Withers after having finished second to Citation in the Kentucky Derby, but was soundly beaten by C. V. Whitneys Vulcans Forge. As Vulcans Forge came back to the winners circle that afternoon, there was a sudden surge of shouting, screaming fans bursting in a wave from under the grandstand, giving the impression that some admirer of the favorite must have jumped from the roof. It developed later that the commotion was caused by a patron who ran amuck for reasons unconnected with Coaltowns downfall. While Native Dancers narrow defeat by Dark Star in the Kentucky Derby destroyed the illusion of invincibility that had attached to the colt in the course of his previous 11 straight triumphs, it did little to his prestige in relation to his generation, particularly as the big gray was the victim of bad racing luck. Eric Guerin said after the Derby that Native Dancer refused to extend himself except for a brief run in the backstretch and through the finaj sixteenth, "spitting out the bit" in the upper stretch. However, he was in a running mood Wednesday morning, when he sped six furlongs in 1:12, carrying his speed in the most sustained effort he has given all year. This morning "The Dancer" breezed a half in :49% over the sloppy Belmont strip, but was not asked to show any speed. Social Outcast is somewhat better than an empty stall, having won five of his 10 starts last year, including the Remsen Handicap, but has not been impressive this season and showed nothing in the Derby. Invigorators Credentials Of the two opposing the Vanderbilt entry, Invigorator has considerably the better credentials. Last year, Invigorator won the Babylon Handicap, Cowdin Stakes and three other races, while finishing a close second to ; Laffango in the Champagne over the same course as the Withers. After a disappointing winter campaign in California, the son of Brookfield from a Wise Councilor mare, which is a sprinting pedigree, came back to be narrowly beaten by Laffango in a division of the Gotham at Jamaica, then fin- : ished a soundly beaten third behind Native 1 Dancer and Tahitian King in the Wood Memorial. He then finished fairly well to I be a distant third behind Dark Star and , Native Dancer in the Derby. After that race, : trainer "Yorky" Macleod is reported to i have said that his charge was a trifle i "short." i Invigorator blew out a handy half in . :47% this morning and appeared to appre- I ciate the sloppy going. Our private weather I forecaster, the gentleman who guards the i clubhouse elevator and claims infallibility I ; in such matters, insists that the weather will be clear and the track something like j fast for the Withers. Real Brother won the Wakefield and [ Albany Handicaps and four others races as 3 a juvenile, but has failed badly in all of his , stakes engagements this year, while occasionally turning in a promising race against [■ lesser company. After being freshened by . Charley Raynor, who succeeded the veteran j Steve Judge as his mentor, the son of Half f Brother to Requested came back in the i Swift, in which he tired as if in need of a race to finish fourth behind Tahitian King, after making a threatening bid on the final J bend. Eric Guerin will again ride Native Dancer , tomorrow, while no pilot has been named as 3 yet for Social Outcast. Hedley Woodhouse ; will guide Invigorator, while Real Brother I will be ridden by Pete Anderson.
