Hitex Returns to Best Form Again Revels in Sloppy Going at Belmont Leads Master Fiddle by Over Length in Cassis Handicap; Remand in Popular Victory BELMONT PARK, Elmont, L. I., N. Y., May 15. — Mrs. Ben F. Whitakers Hitex return 2d to his best form to win the featured Cassis Handicap at Belmont Park today, charging to the end of the seven furlongs a little more than a length before Myhelyn Stables fast-finishing Master Fiddle. Walter S. Homes Raes Reward was a neck farther back, tiring in the final yards, while Hampton Stables Easy Whirl finished three and a half lengths out of the money. Greentree Stables Northern Star was slightly favored over the winner, but stopped badly at the three-eighths pole and finished seventh in the field of eight. Hedley Woodhouse piloted Hitex, completing a saddle double as he had won the fourth event on Taxpayer, and hustled the Bless Me gelding over the distance in l:241/5, fastest seven furlongs of a meeting that has seen exceptionally slow times at that distance. Hitex returned .70 to his numerous supporters in the crowd of 18,430 that turned out this gloomy afternoon. Master Fiddle was first out of the gate in the Cassis, but dropped back to seventh place in a few strides, while Northern Star went to the front, closely followed by Hitex, with Raes Reward a couple of lengths behind. Easy Whirl was a close fifth on the outside as they sped down the back-stretch, while Stella Aurata had a flash of speed, but faded out of contention at the far turn. Puts Northern Star Away Hitex challenged Northern Star rounding the far turn and quickly put that fainthearted horse away, but then had to withstand a strong challenge from Raes Reward, who surged up on the rail. Northern Star was falling back at the quarter pole, while Easy Whirl was making a promising bid on the outside and Master Fiddle was coming on again with a strong run. Raes Reward took a slight lead on the final curve and held on gamely until he passed the eighth pole, where Hitex gradually edged away, adding to his margin rapidly in the last few strides. Master Fiddle continued to close strongly, taking second money in the shadow of the wire, while Easy Whirl appeared to flounder in mid-stretch and tired badly. Thymus ran an even race to be sixth, followed by Iceberg II., who passed a couple of beaten horses after trailing from the start. Eddie Arcaro completed a double and the favorite players scored again when Hal Price Headleys Remand coasted home in the second of the juvenile events. The Revoked gelding took command above the eighth pole in this five furlongs and went on to triumph by two lengths over Circle M Farms War Doings, who finished well, while Mrs. Esther duPont Weirs Cobblers Bench was another three lengths away. Remand paid .40 as" the third winning choice of the afternoon and was teletimed in :59. Arcaro had started the afternoon by winning the opener on Ten Hills Farms Deetzi, who was also the choice and paid .50. „ i
