Phillies Whip Cubs in Ninth, 1 to 0 Tally Lone Marker 4 . On Hamners Single Robin Roberts Posts Fifth Victory of Season; Bruins Muff Chance to Tie Score By the United Press Gran Hamners ninth inning single scored Earl Torgeson with the only run of the game today as the Philadelphia Phils whipped Warren Hacker and the Chicago Cubs, 1 to 0. It was Robin Roberts fifth victory of the season. The victory insured that the Phils would retain at least a share of first place with Milwaukee in the National League chase. It was Hackers fifth defeat of the season against only one victory, and the Cubs failure to score a run extended to 28 innings the distance which Hacker has pitched for a scoreless ball club. Torgeson Doubles Hacker was touched for only four hits until the ninth inning. Then, with one out, Torgeson doubled and tallied on Hammers single. Willy Jones singled to sent Hamner to third, but Smoky Burgess gounded into a double play to end the inning. The Cubs belted Roberts for six hits and It appeared they might tie the game in the ninth when Frankie Baumholtz led off with a triple. Dee Fondy lined a fly deep to right and Johnny Wyrosteks throw caught Baumholtz at the plate for a double play. It was the Phils fourth victory over the Cubs this year without a defeat.
