Big Ten to Okay Rose Bowl Thursday Six Schools Favor, T l Four Oppose Pact See No Important Changes In Present Contract With Pacific Coast Conference By ED SAINSBURY United Press Sports Writer The Big Ten Thursday will officially accept the invitation to renew its Rose Bowl contract with the Pacific Coast Conference for another three years, through January 1, 1957. The vote will be taken by the faculty representatives of the 10 member institutions at the annual spring meeting at Mon-ticello, 111. However, the actual vote of acceptance was made nearly two months ago by some 3,000 educators, ranging from a committee of seven trustees at Northwestern to a faculty of 900 to Wisconsin. Six schools will favor acceptance of the Pacific Coast Conference offer to renew for three years, Illinois, Purdue, Michigan Indiana, Iowa and Ohio State. Pour schools will object, Minnesota, Michigan State, Northwestern and Wisconsin. There was only one point of difference between the proponents of the pacts. Representatives of Illinois and Purdue were instructed to attempt to change the contract terms from its current clause that no Big Ten team may compete more than once in two years to a phrase restricting competition to once in three years. Bid Will Be Doomed It appeared they would not be successful, because the coast invitation called for renewal on the current "one in two" terms. Legislative procedure will call for acceptance of the coast conference proposal before negotiation of details; hence, the bid of Illinois and Purdue to change the terms will bo doomed. They might be more successful in negotiating for the Big Ten representative to obtain more tickets to the classic, but while that shift is likely, the other terms probably shall be unchanged. The vote whether to renew the Rose Bowl agreement will be the first item of business completed at the annual meeting of the conference. The groundwork for the vote was laid by the faculty as a whole at Illinois, Michigan State, Minnesota, Purdue and Wisconsin, by a committee of the faculty at Indiana and Northwestern, and by a committee of faculty members, students and alumni at Iowa, Michigan and Ohio State. Once the pact is approved, the third time the conference has acted upon the matter and the second time it has been renewed, a committee doubtless will be appointed to iron out final details with the Pacific Coast Conference. And after the actual vote, the meeting of faculty representatives and athletic directors will turn to consideration of a proposal to make more stringent the leagues rules on recruiting and subsidization of athletes. The meeting will coincide with the annual outdoor conference track meet, with Illinois and Michigan virtual co-favorites.
