Bft mands jSS mammtmmjammim REFLECTIONS *y NELS0N dunstan PIMLICO, Baltimore, Md., May 23. — With the Kentucky Derby, Withers and Preakness now in the record books, horses in other divisions now come into more prominence. Even though the 0,000 Peabody Memorial for three-year-olds will be run Saturday, the 5,000 Peter Pan on June 3 3 and ana the me 00,000 UU,U0U Belmont Belmont Stakes states on on mammtmmjammim 3 3 and ana the me 00,000 UU,U0U Belmont Belmont Stakes states on on June 13. John B. Campbell is about to announce his weights for the 0,000 Suburban Handicap to be run next week-end, and, as usual, this race is expected to attract a huge holiday throng. The field could be one of the best to contest a handicap to date this year, for among those nominated are Royal Vale, Tom Fool, One Hitter, One Count, Golden Gloves, Bryan G., Kiss Me Kate, Intent, Hitex, Cold Command and First Glance. Crafty Admiral is on the sidelines for an indefinite stay, and Alerted was not named. But even so an excellent renewal is expected. One Hitter won over Crafty Admiral in 2:02 last season and he has been working satisfactorily at Belmont. Should Tom Fool skip the race One Hitter well might make it a consecutive double. It will be interesting to note how Campbell will assign the weights to the Greentree colt, One Count and Royal Vale. AAA The older division has been slow to get under way this year, but to date Tom Fool has been brilliant up to one mile and Royal Vale has shown that he is a horse to contend with in the many rich events on the June and July schedules. The improvement in this imported English horse has been one of the surprises of the season. It will take a One Count, or some other topnotcher, to test him thoroughly at a mile and a quarter. One Count is a horse who requires a prodigious amount of work to bring him to this peak. He tired badly in the McLennan at Hialeah, but since then has been responding well in Older Division Prepares for Rich Events Suburban Should Attract Topnotch Field Delaware Park Stages Oaks on Saturday Example of Racing Caring for Its Own his workouts and should go to the post in the Suburban a much sharper horse. Intent is another who could challenge Royal Vale for he was a stout winner from nine others in the San Juan Capistrano early in March at Santa Anita. While he is at his best over a distance of ground, the condition of his legs must always dictate his schedule. There are many others who must be given a chance to join the Suburban winners list, but the weights will determine whether the more highly regarded go to the post. The handicap division has gained some good horses from last years three-year-olds ranks, but with so many rich events scheduled during the coming months, the division is woefully short of top horses. - * AAA Delaware Park will open its 32-day meeting on Friday with the Wilmington Handicap, as usual, the lead off stake. On Saturday the 0,000 Delaware Oaks will be run, and it is fortunate that this event clashes with the Black-Eyed Susan at Pimlico, both being for three-year-old fillies. Bubbley, winner of the Kentucky Oaks, is now at Delaware Park and is expected to start in the Oaks, a stepping stone to the 0,000 Coaching Club American Oaks at Belmont Park on June 6. Real Delight won the Coaching Club last year, and that race did much in gaining her the award as the best three-year-old filly of the season. It is fairly certain that Bubbley will attempt to duplicate the victory of her older sister. It may be she will be opposed by Mrs. Ada L. Rices Cerise Reine, who defeated her at Keeneland, but could not repeat in the Kentucky Oaks, Grecian Queen, who ran a disappointing race in the Acorn, is expected to be another Coaching Club starter. That is probably the last time that New York fans will see Bubbley until the fall as she will be campaigned with the other Calumet horses at Arlington and Washington Park in Chicago. AAA Laff ango was not a starter in the Preakness as the good son of Errard, who rated second with Tahitian King in the Experimental Handicap, will have to be fired and turned out. There is quite a breeding story behind this horse, who is out of Lovely Girl, a daughter of Vito. This mare had nine straight foals by Grand Slam, and one of these was Billy Bumps, who won the Richard Johnson Stakes at Laurel in 1945. As is often the case, after a mare has been steadily bred to one stallion, the owners decided to make a change. From the union with Errard came the Trio Stables good colt Laffango. In this case the switch was made at a late date and when the yearling was bought by the Trio Stable for ,600 it obtained one of the bargains of the season as the three-year-old is now working up to the 50,000 mark in earnings. There are many lucrative races ahead, but Laffangos owners are wise in halting him at this time so he may be sounder for it later. AAA One of the finest things in racing this season is George Walkers appointment as custodian of foal certificates at Delaware Park. Walker, a good steeplechase rider back in 1944, was paralyzed from the hips downs as a result of a fall. He accepted his misfortune as a hazard of the sport, never complaining and maintaining a cheerful nature the past 10 years. He rides around in a wheel chair and is driven to and from the track by Bill Hunt, another former steeplechase rider, who Mfts his chair in and out of the car. Walker is one of the most courageous Continued on Page Eight REFLECTIONS I By NELSON DUNSTAN Continued from Page Forty men we have ever met, and. it is good to learn that Delaware Park has followed Bowie and Laurel in giving him a job. This is another case of the turf taking care of its own. While it cannot provide jobs for all unfortunates it is cheering that men like Walker are given an opportunity to earn a living. More power to the race track officials who are giving him this employment. Walker was a good chase rider, but he is also a man of fine intelligence and is an asset to any track where he is employed.
