Boulevardier Holds On Courageously to Score Whips Montfaucon by Almost Length in Ascot Park Event By RONALD KRANCER Staff Correspondent ASCOT PARK, Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, May 23. — Mrs. Ronald E. Houses Boulevardier held on stubbornly under a strong ride by apprentice Gardner Darlington to annex one of the better races here this afternoon. The Saturday crowd of 7,600 was not only treated to fine springlike weather, but to formful sport as well. Through the sixth event, four winners were favorites. Boulevardiers margin at the end of the mile and one-sixteenth test was three-quarters of a length over the onrushing Mon-faucon, who was another three lengths before Route Four. Time for the race over a muddy track was 1 : 56 and the winner, a gelded son of Easton, paid .40. Texas Blues moved to the front while on the the stretch turn the first time around the track. When she was clear, apprentice Westfall guided his mount to the inner rail and assumed a commanding five-length lead while on the run down the backstretch. Boulevardier was third at the time with Arow in the runner-up spot. Racing into the far turn, Darlington timed his move to perfection and midway around that bend with Texas Blues tiring badly while in the heaviest going, the ultimate winner forged to the front and at the furlong marker led by two and one-half lengths. Montfaucon was also moving up strongly under jockey McKnight while on the outside of horses. A sixteenth of a mile from the end, Boulevardier was out in the middle of the track and was showing signs of tiring. Montfaucon was making up considerable ground while still on the outside. At the 70-yard pole, Darlington was giving it his all and only through his efforts did the gelding remain on top at the end. It was the second victory of the afternoon for the House establishment. They won the third race with Dreist. Boulevardier won his third race of the meeting and his fourth of the year. Best Trick, given an energetic ride by jockey Buck Thornburg, won the fourth race and paid .80 as the favorite. Bellitas was second after a desperate stretch drive and Grand Nugget was third, another head in arrears. Time of the race was 1:27%. Best Trick drew clear on the backstretch by two lengths, saved ground on the turns maintaining that advantage at the furlong pole. In the final sixteenth Best Trick started to tire badly and Thornburg really went to work on the Grand Slam mare to keep her going and turn down the determined bid of Bellitas. The winner has been very consistent here this spring, winning three races in five starts. All her winning races have been over a water-soaked strip. Dr. Pentick. from the successful establishment of Mr. and Mrs. Pete Maxwell, never looked back soon after the start of the fifth race and went on to a rather easy two-length decision over Suebarb who was closing gamely while on the outside of horses. Dr. Pentick, a four-time winner at the meeting, paid .20 as the third winning favorite of the afternoon. The Watchimtick gelding was ridden by Eddie Plesa.
