Sheridan Heads Canadian HBPA Unit for Fifth Time Also Return Board of Directors To Office at Annual Meeting TORONTO, Ont., May 23.— Vincent J. Sheridan was unanimously re-elected to a fifth term as president of the Horsemens Benevolent and Protective Association last night in the Royal York Hotel. The board of directors was also returned by acclamation for a second term. After many horsemen voiced the opinion that the Ontario Racing Commission was too severe in having security police conducting searches of stables on the different tracks, a resolution was passed asking the directors to request the commission not to make any search of tack rooms, trunks or cars unless the trainer in charge was present when the search was being made. Several horsemen who raced in the United States declared there was no track in the States where searches were made on such an extensive scale as they are in Ontario. They felt that sufficient evidence to warrant searching should be secured before action was taken. This year the minimum claiming price on this circut was raised from ,250 to ,500 for the purpose of eliminating the poorer grade of horses from racing. Suggestions were made that once a horse won a ,500 claiming race it should be forced to race for a higher claiming price. The membership finally agreed to have the directors endeavor to have the racing secretary write conditions for these races whereby an owner would have a better chance of winning in this classification. It was agreed to accede to a request from the Ontario Jockey Club to move scratch time back to 7 a.m. instead of the present 8 a.m. for a period of 10 days on account of post time being set daily at 1:30. On Saturdays and holidays scratch time will be 5 oclock on the previous day. The meeting was not as largely attended as previous sessions but was a representative one. E. P. Taylor, Col. K. R. Marshall, president of the OJC; George Hendrie, general manager of the OJC, and J. Mait-land Macintosh were present. • The board of directors is made up of Charlie Hemstead, Dave Garrity, Harry Addison, Art Halliwell, Howard Mezen, James Cowan, Frank Merrill, Jr., and Ralph MacFarlane.
