; : Black-Eyed Susan Hopes Meet Today Mile and One-Sixteenth Race At Pimlico to Engage Sally Catbird and Wings o Morn By PALMER HEAGERTY Staff Correspondent PIMLICO, Baltimore, Md., May 23 — With another Preakness renewal written into the record books, the Maryland Jockey Club on Monday will enter the final week of its 21 -day spring session, the first conducted under the new management, headed by president Cary Boshamer. This final span will embrace only five racing days, with Tuesday again "dark" on the local scene, and the curtain will be lowered on Saturday, with the running of the 0,000 Black-Eyed Susan Stakes. The Black-Eyed Susan, a mile and one-sixteenth test for three-year-old fillies, will be contested on the same afternoon as. the Delaware Oaks, designed for thoroughbreds of the same age and sex. While such a situation is unfortunate, it seems likely that both races will attract a fair share of lassies. Status of Pair Now in Doubt Mrs. Ada L. Rices Cerise Reine, second in the Kentucky Oaks and Mrs. Ben Whita-kers Grecian Queen, a winner in New York this past Friday, had been regarded as the best in the Black-Eyed Susan, but their local status now is in doubt. Behind Grecian Queen in her Belmont score were Susan eligibles Belair Studs Sabette, W. Schabs Milspal, Ogden Phipps His Duchess and Myhelyn Stables My Truly Fair and it Is possible that two or more of those will face starter Eddie Blind in the locaL offering. Cain Hoy Stables Wings o Morn and Mrs. Mabel R. Burkes Pashpie and also among the probable starters. Other possibilities include Louis L. Hag-gin II. s Sally Catbird, a double sprint winner here, Howell E. Jacksons Ballerina and several lightly regarded fillies. Four of the Black-Eyed Susan hopefuls are entered in Mondays featured ,500 Bed o Roses Purse. They are Wings o Morn, Sally Catbird, Milspal and Pashpie. The distance of this prep affair is a mile and one-sixteenth. With but four entries in the Bed o Roses, racing secretary Fred Col will elected to play the program on the safe side, and has carded a substitute race, to be used only if there is a withdrawal from the feature. Last years spring meeting consisted of only 15 days, during which the average attendance was 12,748 and the daily average mutuel handle 53,202. Unless there is a sharp decrease during the final week, which seems unlikely considering that the last two days comprise a holiday weekend, the 1953 spring figures will surpass those of last season.
