Increase Minimum Purses To ,200 at Hazel Park Michigan iuyenile Championship Of 0,000 Added to Program By DON FAIR Staff Correspondent HAZEL PARK, Mich., Aug. 25. Immediate increase of minimum purses at Hazel Park to ,200 and a re-shuffling of feature races to include an additional 0,000 handicap for two-year-olds, was announced today by president Richard A. Connell, following a conference with Dr. Harry W. Lindy, vice-president, Michigan division of the HBPA, representing the horsemen. The unprecedented success of the current Hazel Park meeting with mutuels and attendance figures running substantially ahead of any previous season, is a main factor in the tilting of purses, as well as the improved class of thoroughbreds on the grounds. "We have naturally toyed with the idea of a rich handicap," Connell said, in announcing the new increase, "but all of those associated with Hazel Parks official family feel that it will be fairer to spread purse money, permitting all horsemen to share more equitably in our success. "For that reason we have authorized a Continued on Page Forty-Eight Increase Minimum Purses To 7200 at Hazel Park Michigan Juvenile Championship Of 0,000 Added to Program Continued from Page One ,200 minimum purse, which is an increase over our previous ,000, and will also present several additonal handicaps to make the schedule the richest in our history." "We are in complete agreement with the policy of spreading the purse distribution, starting with the increase of minimum purses and increasing the purses for better horses proportionately," Lindy said. "This would tend to spread the additional revenue to all horsemen participating in Hazel Parks race meeting instead of one large purse which would not benefit the rank and file." Due to the many fine two-year-olds in training at Hazel Park, one of the new handicaps will be the 0,000 Michigan Juvenile Championship, to be run under allowance conditions over a distance of six and one-half furlongs. This is the highest purse ever posted for two-year-olds at this course. Other attractions scheduled are the Water Wonderland Handicap at six furlongs for a ,500 purse, the 0,000 Border Cities at a mile and a sixteenth, the ,500 Maize and Blue Mile, and the Maple Leaf Mile "for ,500. As usual Hazel Park, which has achieved considerable prestige as the home of long distance runners, will climax its season with two rich races on closing day, October 10, when the 0,000 Marathon Handicap and the ,500 Endurance. Championship are set for decision. The ,000 Stirrup Cup Handicap at six furlongs affords a final chance for sprinters on the final card which Connell and his associates feel will set a brilliant high for the Detroit season.
