i Sailed Away Draws Out In Gansett Stretch Run Hits Wire Two Lengths Before Caldwell in Greystone Purse By AVERY BROWN Staff Correspondent NARRAGANSETT PARK, Pawtucket, R. I., Aug. 25. Vigilant Stables Sailed Away took kindly to the local racing strip and toted his 120-pound impost to a two-length victory in the featured Greystone Purse this afternoon. The War Admiral colt, benefited from a waiting ride from jockey Bob Ussery, taking command inside the final furlong and drawing out at the end of the mile and one-sixteenth. Olen Sledges Caldwell, another who closed from off the torrid pace, got up in time to gain a nose decision for the place over J. P. Ayers Knights Reward. The favored Rush Prince, from the barn of Sam Tufano, was fourth while the highly-regarded Laran finished sixth in the nine-horse field. A crowd of 9,681 was on hand to witness todays racing conducted under ideal conditions. Form players had a field day. as five choices scored during the first seven events, with Green Acres .Stock Farms Sherry L. climaxing the short-priced winners when she paid .20 to account for the sixth race. In the Greystone, Caldwell was the first to begin, but was taken back along with Sailed Away to allow Rush Prince to establish the pace. Knights Reward, however, was sent up to the leader and pressed down the backstretch, never allowing the leader to open more than a, length. Saving ground on the turns, Rush Prince maintained his advantage as he was straightened away for the run through the stretch, but Knights Reward was still full of run and closed the gap to take a neck advantage with a furlong to go. Ussery had Sailed Away in full stride on the outside as he straightened the colt for the final drive and the chestnut responded willingly to overtake the Ayers gelding and increase his lead by each. stride. Despite his game bid, Knights Reward faltered in the closing strides and succumbed to the challenge of Caldwell, who came up on the inside. Slightly overlooked . in the wagering, Sailed Away paid 5.20 and was winning his fifth race of the 1953 season. His time for the middle distance was 1:44 over a fast racing strip.
