4 Pay Record Price of 8,000 For Canadian-Bred Yearling Mrs. R. E. Cook Acquires Filly By Count Fleet; Latter Also Sire of 3,000 Youngster By FRANK ARMSTRONG Staff Correspondent TORONTO, Ont., Aug 25. Price records for Canadian yearlings ascended to a new all-time high at Monday nights tenth annual sales of the Canadian Thoroughbred Horse Society. A filly by Count Fleet Destiny II., by Asterus, sold for 8,000 and assumed the status of Canadas richest yearling. A beautifully made filly, she created spirited bidding when auctioneer George Swinebroad asked for an opening bid of ,000. The figures moved along through the upper brackets and she was finally knocked down to the Blue Hills Farm, owned by Mrs. R. E. Cooke, a Toronto racing enthusiast. Another Count Fleet filly out of Gotit, a Pompey mare, sold to Jack Begen of Calgary, Alberta, for 3,000. The miss also caused a flurry of excitement among bidding ring-siders, but the western Canada turfman persisted to the drop fo the hammer. These two were the record breakers for individual high, and the previous high of 1,000 was equalled when John Stuart purchased a bay colt by Bimelech Aloof, by North Star n. Bidding on the handsome yearling opened at ,000. Conklin Consignment Averages ,733 The trio of top prices were from the consignment of Frank Conklins Midway Farm, who had sold the previous price record-holder. Midways consignment of six, which included a colt by Roman Stimulitha, by Stimulus, which brought 0,600, realized a total of 8,400 for an average of ,733. Western-breds from the Alberta nursery of Hon. Lucien Maynard made a reasonably good impression and a total of 6,700 was realized for six head. The yearlings could be described as the best lookers to come out of the West to the sales ring. Dr. Carlos Otto of Venezuela was the most actvie bidded and acquired 17 head for 4,300. He had previously purchased at the Saratoga sales and will be a patron at the Keeneland fall sales. While the price range was generally better than previous sales, the average was only slightly above in round figures though higher onthe basis of a greater number of yearlings. Six-three head brought a total of 65,000 for an average of ,628, compared with last years average of ,113 for 46 yearlings which realized 7,000. The sale was considered satisfactory to the Canadian Thoroughbred Breeders Society and the Fasig-Tipton Company. It was in keeping with the major marts where top stock brings top prices, and the rest sell for what they are worth.
