WASHINGTON NOTEBOOK u.mmm WASHINGTON PARK, Home-wood, 111., Aug. 25. Washington Park will stage its version of the Arlington Lassie Stakes in the 0,000 added Princess Pat Stakes to be run here Wednesday. The purse for the event has been "upped" 0,000 this year, which makes it one of the most important affairs for two-year-old fil lies to be run this season. Queen Hopeful, who surprised in the Lassie in beating Miz Clementine, will attempt to add to the string of successes for the Hasty House Farm stable. If she wins she will be duplicating the performance of Miss Mary V. Fishers Fulvous, who took both the Lassie and the Princess Pat last year. Two others have accomplished the feat as two-year-olds. They are r Bewitch and Beaugay. Blue Delight, dam of Real Delight, took" the Arlington Lassie as a two-year-old and won the Princess Pat as a four-year-old. In that and one other year the race was for three -year-olds and upward, fillies and mares. Since 1943 it has been for two-year-old fillies, exclusively. Duchess Peg and Princess Lygia each won a Lassie only to be beaten in the Princess Pat. And Fulvous time of last season will be hard to top. It was 1:09. Doug Dodson rode both Bewitch and Beaugay to victory and also won it with Heres Hoping, the filly who trimmed Duchess Peg. No other jockey has taken it more than once. AAA We have it on good authority that Eddie Arcaro, who rode Native Dancer in the American Derby, will be pitted against the Vanderbilt charger when the gray colt faces his most important test. The unconfirmed report has Arcaro as the jockey on Tom Fool in the Sysonby Mile at Belmont the latter part of next month when the four-year-old handicap champion will meet The Dancer in jiAonesularrider Princess Pat Is Companion Feature to Lassie Queen Hopeful Can Duplicate FuIyous Feat Pichon Replaces Kennedy in Stewards Stand Several Invaders Will Seek Meadowland Honqrs of Tom. Fool, who is on the disabled list at present, is not ready to return to the saddle at that time.. Of course, Eric Guerin, who, because of suspension, was deprived of the mount on Native Dancer in the American Derby, will have the leg up on the great three-year-old. Arcaro took a day of rest today and could not be reached, but it is likely he would be noncommittal as arrangements have not been completed as yet. AAA Among those expected to be in the crowd Wednesday is John W. Galbreath, owner of Darby Dan Farm. He is making the trip to ,watch Tiis good two-year-old filly, Clear Dawn, try for honors in the Princess Pat. Trainer Jack Long will be present to saddle the miss, who was third to the crack eastern miss, Evening Out, in the filly end of the National Stallion Stakes. . . . Weights for the Washington Park Handicap will be out Friday. There is a possibility that Hampton Stables Alerted, and Mrs. Sam Pistorios Tuscany will be out for the race, which will be decided one week from Saturday. . . . Jockey Johnny Adams was ailing yesterday and cancelled his mounts for the day. . . . Teague Pichon, who serves as steward representing the Louisiana Racing Commission at the Fair Grounds during the winter, has replaced John F. Kennedy as associate steward here, Kennedy having de- parted for Las Vegas. . . . John Heckmann will ride one of the Hal Price Headley two-year-olds in the Washington Park Futurity. Headley has several colts named for the race. . . . Jockey Ken Church will ride Dixie Flyer for Duntreath Farm in the Beverly Handicap for fillies and mares, to be decided a week from Wednesday. . . . Owner Don McKellar has engaged Nick Burger to train Twenty Gauge, replacing Larry Thompson. AAA Trainer Charlie Eads went to Dunedin, Fla., where his wife will undergo surgery, and during his absence Sir Mango and the other horses in the Harry Eads stable will be handled by Rex Aubrey. . . . April Duke, a five-year-old gelding owned by Mrs. Ann Bennett, developed irreparable tendon trouble and was destroyed by Dr. N. D. Lusk. . . . Frank Studlow says he believes the sleeping sickness among horses now prevalent in Western Canada has extended down this way. Says the horses he backs all seem as if they would like to take a nap. . . . Golden Trend, who has been racing well in top company at Detroit, will be a starter in Saturdays Meadowland Handicap and will be ridden by jockey Carroll Bierman. . . . Trainer Lou Finley is shipping Ace Destroyer, the Sheridan Handicap winner, and four others to Randall Park, where Ace Destroyer has a stakes engagement. The re-mainer of horses trained by Finley will remain here until the"end of the meeting and will then re transferred to ThistleDown. . . . The Brookmeade Stables Sunglow and Picador arrived. Xjast time out, Sunglow won a division of the Boardwalk Handicap at Atlantic City and Picador was third to Tuscany and Joey Boy in the second division. They will start in Saturdays Meadowland. Continued on Page Forty-Three Washington Notebook By J. J. MURPHY Continued from Page Fifty-Two The Boardwalk, like the Meadowland, is decided on the grass. AAA It seems as if the four-year-old Oh Leo just had to make good yesterday. His owner, James H. Dunn, was roughly treated by robbers Saturday evening and relieved of a sum of money. Owner Dunn has been permitting Oh Leo to take it rather easy for the past year and the colt maybe felt it j was time to step out and show something. He ran six furlongs in 1:10 to take his first purse since last September. Until he con- ; nected Monday, Oh Leo had been slipping in the oat-earning department. He took down 21,222 as a two-year-old two years ago, earned 5,300 last year, and 00 this season, prior to his victory. But Oh Leo doesnt owe owner Dunn a thing. The Oak Park sportsman bought him as a yearling for ,600. AAA The Washington Park Handicap will be run Labor Day for a purse of 00,000 added. It will be at one mile, same distance as the recent Spartan Handicap in which High Scud, Ruhe, Sub Fleet, and Mark-Ye-Well came under the wire in that order. We wonder what the odds would be that they finish that way in the handicap. Will have to ask "Boston," the peerless price-maker. Probably 100-1 or more. It is our guess that Mark-Ye-Well will be trie favorite, Sub Fleet next, Ruhe next, and High Scud, the outsider of the four. Each ran a fine race in the Spartan. Mark-Ye-Well was not punished and came from some distance back, Ruhe closed even more grountlWMrartdTjur Fleet was in close quarters in the stretch, and High Scud was wide all the way. The winners time of 1:34 was very good. Ruhe was beaten a neck, Sub Fleet a neck and a nose, and Mark-Ye-Well just about one length. Mark-Ye-Well gave High Scud 20 pounds, Ruhe 11 pounds, and Sub Fleet seven pounds. Ruhe is a five-year-old; the others are four.
