Queen Queen Hopeful Hopeful Triumphant; Triumphant; Sabette Sabette Annexes Annexes Alabama Alabama Takes Princess Pat Stakes To Duplicate Lassie Score Hasty House Filly Defeats Chorus Khal With Closing Rush; Earns 8,320 Purse By J. J. MURPHY WASHINGTON PARK, Homewood, 111., Aug. 26. The Princess Pat Stakes, decided here this afternoon, was the richest race for two-year-old fillies ever run on the American turf. The purse, with 13 starters, grossed 07,490 and the winners share was 8,320. The "bakersdozen" field raced six-furlongs and the winner was Hasty House Farms fine filly, Queen Hopeful, who was duplicating her success in the Lassie Stakes at Arlington Park. The daughter of Roman beat the California-bred Chorus Khal, winner of the Hollywood Lassie Stakes, to the end by three parts of a length, with Clear Dawn, in from Atlantic City for the affair, finishing third, and I Cosentina, an outsider, racing to fourth place. Queen Hopeful ran the distance in 1:11 and was a strong second choice of the 15,295 in attendance, paying .80 She was ridden by jockey Johnny Adams. Queen Hopeful ran a beautiful race, and Adams put up an excellent ride. The veteran jockey had the Hasty House filly off well from the outside post position and she became a strong contender almost at once. Nearing the far turn she was sixth but was less than three lengths removed from the pace and she made a positive move nearing the stretch turn. Once straightened out for the run down the long home lane Queen Hopeful gained on Chorus Khal, who had taken a fair lead and she had the West Coast representative collared an eighth out. During that final furlong Adams kept pumping, while John Burton rode Chorus Khal well, but it was obvious a sixteenth out that nothing short of a catastrophe could prevent the red hot Hasty House Farm from chalking up another rich purse, as the others were well back of the leading pair and seemed to have little chance to make it. Chorus Khal Draws Clear Although the race was not a particularly exciting one, it had its moments, especially when Chorus hal drew clear of the field approaching xhe stretch bend. The daughter of Khaled was bred for speed and she demonstrated it by moving from third place at the quarter to acquire her advantage. Burton made no mistakes as he saved ground, and Queen Hopeful was required to come to the outside of a necessity. Make no mistake about it, Queen Hopeful was the best and may be the best two-year-old filly in the land. When the start came, Black Main was first to appear in front, but that was by but an inch, and Fleece soon took command, with Chorus Khal, Golly and Beanir all moving into contention. On the far turn, that is, at the quarter, Fleece was showing in front by "an eyelash," with Clear Dawn, who had moved up, being second on the inside, and Chorus Khal, Golly and Beanir lined across the track. Just as they rounded the bend, Beanir, with Arcaro aboard, showed a tendency to bear out, and coming to the stretch bend it was Chorus Khal leading Golly by two lengths, with Beanir, who was still wide, being in third place, and Continued on Page Forty -Three Queen Hopeful Registers Notable Juvenile Double Takes Washingtons Princess Pat Following Arlington Lassie Tally Continued from Page One Queen Hopeful moving to fourth. Clear Dawn had been in rather tight quarters and dropped back slightly, while Fleece was tiring. But the stretch finished the tussle as far as all but Queen Hopeful and Chorus Khal were concerned. Those having been prominent in the early part, with the exception of Chorus Khal, began to drop back, and as previously mentioned, it was Queen Hopeful and Chorus Khal all through the stretch. In winning the Princess Pat, which was her sixth success in 10 starts she was twice second and twice third , Queen Hopeful, a ,800 purchase as a yearling, boosted her earnings to 55,423. She is the fourth filly to have won- both the Arlington Lassie arid the Princess Pat as a two-year-old. The others were Beaugay, Bewitch, and Fulvous. Blue Delight won it as a three-year-old and a four-year-old. Queen Hopeful now needs but 3,578 to top the all-time record of a two-year-old miss for a single season. That honor is held by Top Flight. Following the race jockey Adams and owner Allie Reuben had the following to say: Jockey John Adams: "This one was a little easier than the Arlington Lassie when we nosed out Miz Clementine, but that Chorus Khal gave us a real, all-out battle all the way. Shes a wonderful little filly." Allie E. Reuben: "Were going to aim at the rest of the big ones, and shes eligible for them the Matron at Belmont, the Pim-lico Futurity, and the Selima at Laurel. I hope she can do it." The South Bend Handicap at one mile was the afternoons chief supporting piece and it was taken by Mrs. Osmer Demings Thaxter, who was dropping down from stakes ranks. Three-year-olds were engaged and Thaxter raced in sixth place in the seven-horse field to the stretch turn. Then jockey Ronnie Baldwin sent him forward and he forged to the front of Five Star Gen. in the last sixteenth and beat the latter to the end by a half length. Five Star Gen. easily conquered the favored Breakers, who raced wide in the stretch and weakened when it came to an issue. Thaxter paid 1.60 in the mile event. The largest Daily Double payoff of the Washington Park meeting was posted when the winning combination of Unizano, a 75.60 winner in the second race, and Dark Theatre, who was well played in the first event, paid 32.20. Unizano, ridden by Kenneth Church, came from last place to be up in the closing strides, while Dark Theatre, ridden by Don Scurlock, lasted to nose out Pielettaway. Eternal Will, a colt who had not started in many months, was backed from 20 to 1 to favoritism in the third event but wound up in last place in the seven-horse field.
