Color Guard Back in Winning Ways Drives Past Wire Clear of Mrs. G. R. Odds-On Favorite Forced to Survive Foul Claim Before Taking Randall Park Feature By RONALD KRANCER Staff Correspondent RANDALL PARK, North Randall, Ohio, Aug. 26. W. L. Huntleys heavily favored Color Guard, ridden by Joe Servis, won the featured Canton Day Purse, but had to survive a claim of foul which was made by Ray Zanelli, rider of McCreight, who finished third. When the result was made official, Color Guards many backers collected .40. His time for the mile and one-sixteenth was 1:44. Mrs. G. R. was second, a length in arrears of the winner and a nose better than McCreight. A crowd of 6,626 turned out on a very hot afternoon to witness the racing program, which was very formful, with four of the publics choices taking the first seven races. Mrs. G. R. Sets Pace Color Guard was well off the early pace, as usual, in the Canton Day. Mrs. G. R. went out and set the early pace and was showing the way by three lengths as the field straightened away for the long run up the backstretch. Red Flush was second and Royal Charles was in third position. Color Guard was nevt to last, seven lengths off the pace. Midway up the backstretch, Mrs. G. R. was still in front by three lengths, with the rest of the field bunching up behind her. Red Flush was second, a head before Royal Charles, who, in turn, was another head to the good of Country Gossip. McCreight was still another head back and a like margin over the ultimate winner. Guard now in hot pursuit and McCreight third another half length back. On the stretch turn Color Guard got to the front and the furlong marker was a half length before Mrs. G. R. who was holding on over McCreight. In the last furlong Color Guard improved his margin by another half length with Servis mildly urging his mount. Mrs. G. R. held on tenaciously over McCreight for the place award. Zanelli claimed that he had been bothered midway around the far turn by the winner, but the motion pictures of the race revealed that Color Guard was clear of McCreight. The winner who is by Occupy was bred by Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilt and was winning his second, race of the year in 19 starts. Malleable, racing in the silks of -the East View Stable, which is owned by the Charles Town sportsman, A. J. Boyle, scored by a scant nose over Albee in the Globe Trotters Purse at six furlongs. Mikes Money was a distant third, five lengths back. Malleable returned his backers .20 and was clocked in 1:12. He was ridden by apprentice Gardner Darlington, who is also from Charles Town. Abe Saperstein, the president of the Harlem Globe Trotters, who are playing a basketball game tonight at the Lake Front Stadium, presented a trophy to A. H. Taylor, trainer of Malleable, who accepted on behalf of Mr. Boyle.
