HALTER LACE raced THE DITCH into defeat to take command after three furlongs and continued on gamely thereafter under clever rating to outgame OUR VALDINA. The latter came out to the middle of the track for the drive and under brisk urging rapidly was wearing down the leader. SMITHTOWN was unable to improve his position when hard hustled through the late stages. THE DITCH, much used early, had little left when the real test came. MONTAUK raced wide. The latter, far back early, rallied too belatedly to become an endangering factor. MOLLY BELL tired. BARATARIA caught tiring horses. BIG SWITCH failed to stay. FIGHTING BYRNE had no apparent excuse. LANDSCAPING alternated in pressing and Setting the early pace, relinquished the lead momentarily to SECANT nearing the final hurdle, but came again under adept handling and was along in the final stride to gain the nod. SECANT, never far back, assumed a dear lead after completing the last jump, but faltered slightly when punished thereafter and was unable to withstand the top one. LOUGH REE was unable to improve his position when briskly ridden through the late stages. MARSO lacked a rally. ANOTHER HYACINTH was outrun. LOVELY ARGON tired. IRISH PAGEANT bobbled badly on the seventh obstacle and was unable to recover. COOSAWATCHIE was through early. SUN RULER II. stumbled and fell at the first hurdle. TWO STARS recovered readily after stumbling slightly leaving the gate, raced in closest pursuit of STEPPING JAN for a half-mile, took command thereafter and under stern pressure retained a safe advantage over LONG STRETCH. The latter moved into the runner-up position at the furlong marker, continued in the middle of the track for the drive, but under punishment was not good enough. HURRY BY raced evenly through the late stages without mishap. ROSEY MISS began sluggishly. GEOMETRIC was unable to attain the lead and tired. STEPPING JAN, much used early, had little left.
