Young, one of the most competent stewards in the land. Robert McAuliffe, who has, as usual, turned in an excellent job as racing secretary at Sportsmans Park, will be one of the stewards at Fairmount and will depart for that track Sunday. Rode First Winner at Hawthorne Richard Miguez, one of the leading apprentice riders here, will celebrate his eighteenth birthday Saturday and will report to his draft board before leaving for Detroit. Miguez rode the first winner of his career at Hawthorne last September 27; so still has many months left in which to enjoy the apprentice allowance . . . Ike Bassett, the mid-Western representative of the Jockeys Guild, dropped in for a short visit and then left for Beulah Park, Ohio. Will be at Fair-mount Park Saturday . . . Remember the gallant mare, Fate, who was winning races hereabouts at the age of 12? Well, she has a two-year-old son named Fateless, by Hachazo, who has just been sold by Mikel Farm, the breeders, to Marion VanBerg. Tom Pruett has shipped the horses in his care to Fairmount Park. ... As early as the sixth inning, turf reporter Elmer Polzin, a rabid Cub fan, predicted that pitcher Sam Jones would throw a no-hitter. Don Wagner, who completed a 10-day suspension, will resume riding this week end. . . . Jockey Bennie Green, who came from New York last year to ride the winner of the LaSalle Handicap, will have a mount in the event again this season. . . . Del Carroll will continue to train Eternal Frolic, recently purchased from Valley View Farm by Mrs. M. A. Kern. . . . Roy T. McDonnel will ship his racer. Tiger Harris, to Omaha for the opening.
