Star Routers Seek Ascot Gold Cup Excel Likely Choice Over Royal Jacopo, Blue Crown In ,000 Two-Mile Test By J. R. BATTY Staff Correspondent ASCOT PARK, Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio. May 13. — Following long weeks of pre-cisioned workouts, intermingled with a few strenuous races, a dozen long distance runners are ready for the real test, the Ascot Gold Cup, a two-mile endurance event which will have its 15th running Saturday at this track. Admitted to the Ascot Gold Cup, which this year offers a purse of ,000, because of having won or finished second over the local strip during the current meeting at a distance of one and a half miles or over, this field represents the best seasoned performers stabled on the grounds. Six others are listed as "also eligibles" in event of withdrawals from the original field. President Horace Adams and general manager Pete ODonnell, both expressed gratitude to the horsemen for their co- operation in making the Gold Cup field this year probably the best in the long history of the gruelling test. With a break in the weather, the track is fast at the time of writing but showers are forecast, Ascot Park could entertain the largest crowd of the current session, which closes next Saturday. Awards to Trainer and Jockey Posted as the eighth race on a nine -race card, the field in the Ascot Gold Cup is comprised of Chiloe II., 110; Copa Tip, 105; Big Bomber, 117; Excel, 121; Woodchuck Joe, 108; Blue Teal, 116; Royal Jacopo, 119; Blue Crown, 118; Golden Wing, 110; Faraway, 109; Bobs Ace, 109, and Everest 110. Replacements could come from Super- Salesman, Big Hope, Three Lou M., An- other Nip, Lucky Jonnie and Chan. A handsome gold trophy will be awarded the winning owner and the winning jockey receives 00. A trainers award of 50 will be given by the management. Mrs. Horace Adams and Zolton Gombos, chairman of the Ohio State Racing Commission, will make the presentation. The field for the Gold Cup will be dis- patched at the head of the backstretch and will pass the stands three times before completing the required distance over this three-quarter mile oval. Of course, post position will have very little bearing on the outcome of the ascot gold cup. A handicap race, Leslie Jane Stables Ex- eel was assigned top impost by racing sec- retary Charles Henry because of manner he overpowered the opposition in two races going the distance of one and one-sixteenth miles. Excel holds the local track standard for one and nine-sixteenths miles, set April 9 under 119 pounds, when he went the dis- tance in 2:43. This time has not been closely approached since. Royal Jacopo has won twice at the meet- ing and this season has a total of five vie- tories from 12 starts. Owned by the partnership of Snedigar and Ellsworth, he figures to be a stout contender in the Gold Cup. ■ ; ] 1 s i | 1 J i * I t , j t j £ f i t c t £ i s T
