—mmmmmmmmmmmmm m~~~i*. -.--... Kentucky By Joe Thomas Swaps, Judy Rullah Strike Parallel Dams of Fleet Pair Similarly Bred Almahurst Produce Wins Oaks, Roseben LEXINGTON, Ky., May 13.— The two most impressive performances this spring in Kentucky were Swaps brilliant victory in the Eighty-First Kentucky Derby —mmmmmmmmmmmmm and and Judy Judy Rullahs Rullahs eight-length eight-length and and Judy Judy Rullahs Rullahs eight-length eight-length score in her racing debut in a division of the Thoroughbred Club of America Dinner Purse at Keeneland. Surprising is the fact that their dams are very similarly bred. Swaps is out of Iron Reward, a daughter of Beau Pere and Iron Maiden, whose dam is Betty Derr. Judy Rullah, who is by Nasrullah, is out of Judy-Rae, a daughter of Beau Pere and Betty Betty Derr. Derr. The The founder founder of of this this m~~~i*. -.--... Betty Betty Derr. Derr. The The founder founder of of this this remarkable family was Uncles Lassie, a mare bred by the partnership of Hal Price Headley and William B. Miller. A stakes winner herself. Uncles Lassie later produced Clyde Van Dusen, who, trained by his namesake, carried H. P. Gardners silks to victory in the 1929 Derby. The year before Clyde Van Dusen won the Louisville classic, Uncles Lassie foaled Betty Derr. A daughter of Sir Gallahad III., Betty Derr turned out to be an excellent race mare, winning 14 races, including the Debutante Stakes at Churchill Downs and the Latonia Oaks. Betty Derr was first owned by Van Dusen after she retired to stud, but when he went to work for Louis B. Mayer late in the 30s, he sold his bloodstock to the movie magnate and it was the latter who bred Iron Maiden and Judy-Rae. Iron Maiden raced at two and three for Mayer, was bred at four to Beau Pere. Somewhere along the line, she became the property of W. W. "Tiny" Naylor, who was the breeder of the filly she produced — Iron Reward. Later, Iron Maiden returned to the races in the colors of Ellwood B. Johnston and did her best racing, winning the Del Mar Handicap, among other races. Iron Reward wound up in the broodmare band of Rex Ellsworth, for whom she produced Swaps. Judy-Rae Won Juvenile Feature Judy-Rae raced for her breeder as a two-year-old, winning the Anita Chiquita Stakes, and at three finished third in the Santa Anita Susana shortly before she was sold in the first Mayer sale to Coldstream Stud for 5,000. When Coldstream was dispersed in the fall of 1951, Millard Waldheim secured Judy-Rae for his broodmare band at Bwamazon Farm for 3,000. She was in foal to Priam II. at the time and the foal she produced was The Genius, a three-year-old who showed considerable promise in his early races this year. Her next foal for Waldheim was Judy Rullah, who is still at Keeneland with trainer Strother Griffin. She was fired not long ago for a splint and upon her recovery will be pointed for the rich two-year-old filly fixtures to be staged this summer in Chicago. The past week end was a very good one for horses sired by Almahurst Farm stallions. On Friday, Djed-dahs daughter Lalun copped the Kentucky Oaks and Heliopolis Red Hannigan narrowly beat Artismo, a son of Goya n., in the Roseben Handicap at Belmont last Saturday. Movie director David Butler is in the Blue Grass with a film crew shooting scenes for a forthcoming picture on racing. Butlers "Kentucky" was one of the best movies ever made carrying a racing theme. The story for the new film was written by Gene Markey, and Paul Ebelhardt, general manager of Calumet, is helping out on the technical aspects here. Dam of Pollys Jet Died Recently The victory of Pollys Jet in the Juvenile Stakes at Belmont Wednesday was received with mixed emotions at Manchester Farm here. It was a joyous occasion, on the one hand, since the Polynesian colt was bred and raised there by Duval Headley. But his dam, Marys Dell, died this spring shortly after foaling a colt by I Will. She was only 12 years old. However, Headley will offer another son of Polynesian at this summers Keeneland Sales, a yearling out of Buddy Kenney, who is a granddaughter of Alcibiades. Leslie Combs n. received word from Lord Derbys stud in England that Spring Beauty foaled a chestnut colt by Alibhai there on Derby Day. The daughter of Myrtlewood is abroad under a trade arrangement between Combs and the famous English breeder. However, the colt is the property of Combs. Her foals during the next three years will be owned by Lord Derby. The master of Spendthrift has Lord Derbys Hyperion mare, Lunaria. Alex Miles, a thoroughbred owner from South Australia, visited the Blue Grass this week. He owns Co-Star, the best hurdler Down Under. The horse recently set a new world record for two miles over the low jumps.
