! | j j I Slamminharp Wins Mayfield at Downs Mclntyre Gelding in Clear At Wire While Speedy Foot Is Second on Sloppy Track CHURCHILL DOWNS, Louisville. Ky ., May 13. — Slamminharp, racing for P. Mclntyre, found the sloppy footing to his liking and the competition within his limitations to drive to a length and a half tally in the Mayfield Purse that featured the racing here on this gloomy Friday the 13th. The winner, in command most of the way under the guidance of apprentice Robert Dever, recorded his victory at the direct expense of T. A. Grissoms Speedy Foot while almost two lengths farther back Sleepy Norma was third for J. M. Hart in the field of nine three-year-olds who met under claiming tags ranging from ,000 to ,500. Co-favorites in the race were Henry Forrests Tricky Homer and Mrs. Jay G. Stephensons Drafting Room and these finished fourth and sixth, respectively. There was a stiff tussle for leadership immediately after the start with Pastoral. Drafting Room and the ultimate winner scampering for command heads apart down the back lane. On the turn Slamminharp was able to edge into a clear advantage as Pastoral dropped out of it and Drafting Room raced closest to the pace and before Speedy Foot. Through the home lane Slamminharp continued to hold sway but Speedy Foot succeeded in dislodging Drafting Room from the runner-up post and in this order the first three came to the end. There was no apparent excuse for either of the choices other than track conditions. Fans Withstand Heavy Rains A very heavy rainfall started just before the first race and continued throughout the early afternoon leaving the track in a sloppy condition but failing to deter a crowd estimated at 8,600 from taking in the sport. The first race was run in a heavy thunderstorm which did not deter Roth-more Farms favored Nippersink from leading throughout to score by two and a half lengths over Thomas Piatts fast-closing Summer Blues as Token Tune dropped back to third place for Girdler and Drymon after forcing the early pace. This five-furlong dash was fashioned for maiden juvenile fillies and the winner was making her second appearance under silks. She is by Easy Mon-Asianna and was second in her first racing venture. Racing for J. B. Burns and dropping down in quality of competition, Heres Jake, the choice, was best of the field of a dozen three-year-olds in the second race at six furlongs but had to give his best to earn a neck verdict over A. L. Colins Fran-colin. These two were much the best of the others and there was a gap of five and a half lengths before Game Prince was third for C. ONeil Jr. B. A. Thompsons Bull Hierocles drove through on the inside in the stretch to gain top honors in the third race at six furlongs. The race was fashioned for non-winners this year and it was H. A. Deeps Super Bee who took the place award after getting to the front in the stretch. Lady Norm was third for Creel Brown, Jr. The success of Bull Hierocles gave jockey L. C. Cook his second saddle victory of the afternoon. He had guided Heres Jake in the second race.
