PHILLIPS Staff Correspondent GARDEN STATE PARK, Camden, N. J., May 13. — Twelve of the best available £hree-year-olds, of whom several have a possibility of entering the picture for sophomore honors of the year, were named this morning to match strides in the thir-** teenth renewal of the mile and a furlong Jersey Stakes. Saratoga, who performs under the Montpelier colors of Mrs. duPont Scott, is generally conceded to be the lead-:" ing candidate with Marylands favorite jockey, Nick Shuk, shuttling in from Pim-and lico to attempt a repeat of his success astride the Blenheim II. cold in the Chesa-13 peake Stakes. Expected to be his sternest rivals are Mrs. Jan Burkes Dedicate, who equalled the six-furlong record in his Delaware Valley Stakes triumph here; George D. Wideners Mandil, who finished third Continued on Page Three WandSHSaBBSRSjk sXPft, ££ IBB H * # all !■? x - Tand? * * * * # * * mrn * 111 •* * *V« * */» ** * *v * *# * ♦ * * ?; » % * * * ♦ ♦ * " • *v • * f »*»* * * « *## *♦ ♦ . * »Z i_f «. »_: v % * ~r » * - % Twelve ■ Three-Year-Olds Match Speed In 2,800 Jersey Stakes Rnewal t g s . ■ I 1 T s c £ t j ; * : r c * t s p „ JJ t 1 a y „ Chesapeake Victor Saratoga Seen Choice Over Dedicate, Mandil, Simmy at Camden Continued from Page One ; after encountering trouble in the Chesapeake, ] and Mrs. Dorothy Pershall Belz 1 fleet Simmy. The Jersey, one of the few sophomore s spring features to be conducted under i allowance conditions, will be valued at | 2,800 with a net value of 5,300 to the winner if the field remains intact. It is the 1 most important of all of the early season fixtures on the New Jersey racing scene J and a creditable effort tomorrow will also i add to the credentials of those who have * their sights on the May 28 running of the Preakness I at Pimlico. The highest weight under the conditions t to be carried tomorrow is 118 pounds, which is the impost of Saratoga, Dedicate and , Rokeby Stables Cup Man. The others, all of the male sex, will shoulder 111 pounds. Saratoga has not started since his Chesapeake tally at Laurel on April 23, but j trainer Frank A. Bonsai has had him going t through his paces regularly and he has j impressed the dockers with each morning £ appearance. This morning he "blew-out" f three furlongs in a quick :34%. It was a i handy move and much more impressive t than turned in by three of his rivals. Dedicate c was under a strong rein and breezed t the distance in :36%: Gee M. Cohens Chuck Thompson went in :35% and Dr. £ Sidney G. Babbitz Speed Rouser was timed i in :Mand both of the latter handily. Mrs. Scotts colt was reported to have "washed out," and perhaps did not like the s sloppy track when he finished last in the Florida T Derby, which preceded his front-running Chesapeake victory. He started four times in all last winter, winning an overnight sprint, getting away badly and being outrun in the Everglade Stakes, and gamely pressing Nashua while finishing second in the Flamingo. He won two stakes and three other races in 11 starts as a two-year-old. Dedicate Has Win Skein Going Dedicate, who will be ridden by Sam Boulmetis, is a winner of his last four starts in succession. The son of Prince -quillo and Dini won his only start at a mile and a sixteenth, which was over a muddy track at Jamaica, then particularly impressed local observers in his next start here in the Delaware Valley. Boulmetis had to take him back after a good break when horses bunched before him, but he circled contention and won going away in 1:09%. Trainer George Winfrey returned him to New York after the race, and shipped him back here on Thursday. This will be his sternest test to date, but a triumph would place him in a bright light for future engagements. Mandil was bumped into the fence making his stretch rally in the Chesapeake and he gave a good effort to recover and finish third, although four lengths behind Chuck Thompson. The Nasrullah colt won three allowance races in Florida last winter and has not started since the Chesapeake. He will be ridden by Willie Hartack. Chuck Thompson failed to menace Saratoga seriously in the Chesapeake, but he MRS. MARION duPONT SCOTT— Owner of Saratoga. j | ] . Eldon Nelson will be in from Maryland to be his pilot. Simmy, who will be handled by Ray Broussard, equaled the world mark for six and one-half furlongs late last winter at Gulfstream Park, but he finished a sound- ly beaten third behind Nashua and Sum- mer Tan his last start in the Wood Memo- rial. Speed Rouser was" shipped all the way from Churchill Downs, where he won a seven furlong race on Kentucky Derby Day. He is another of the many in the field whose mainstay seems to be speed. He has several victories, but his outstanding ef- fort was a second to the ill-fortuned Roman Patrol in the Louisiana Derby. John Heckman is coming in from Kentucky to ride. Cup Man will be ridden by Jack West- rope, who won the Jersey last year on War of Roses. He has shown particular promise on occasion, but recently has been beaten by members of tomorrows field. William Goadby Loewjs Grandpaw triumphed in one of his two starts this year, and last season he ran up a string of seconds against the best in stakes company. Duntreath Farms Fleet Path has some promising efforts to his credit and he has been working particularly well. King Ranchs Mainlander won his maiden race at Belmont just last Wednesday, but apparently is well regarded by veteran trainer Max Hirsch. Barclay Stables Blazing Count won his last at Laurel, beating Trio Stables Royal Morse who finished third.
