By Far, who shipped here from California after winning five California engagements, is rated by trainer Wright as one of the best horses to come under his supervision. The colt has shown versatility over all types footing and, after trimming a good field in the Cranwood Purse here May 26 on a heavy track, came back with a smashing performance to capture the twenty-first running of the Alger on Memorial Day. Taking command soon after the start of the latter stake, By Far was under strong pressure through the stretch to nose out C. andl P. Farms hard-charging Swivet. In the band following the top pair to the wire were such sharp rivals as Bright Shoes, Hangover, Vantage, Easy Paddy and First Refusal. Easy Paddy, a six-year-old Halberd gelding, was a good class winner in Florida before his shipment here and he posted a "six-one-six" record during his 1954 campaign. The Almar stable representative had no excuse in the Alger and he would have to improve tremendously to become a serious factor Saturday. Second Avenue Churchill Winner Sternest opposition for By Far in the Mechanical Day Purse probably will be furnished by Knights Reward and Second Avenue. Knights Reward, a well-conformed Reaping Reward gelding, annexed the seven furlongs Spring Handicap in Chicago on April 30, defeating seven rivals while Second Avenue, a former stakes winner and hero of the 1953 Michigan Mile, scored a convincing sprint victory on the closing day of the Churchill Downs spring session. The Buhl stallion raced disappointingly here May 28, winding up no better than fifth in the three-quarters mile Flint Purse. Best supporting attraction on the Saturday nine-race card is the six furlongs sixth race. Seven classy performers will meet in the secondary offering; Reiber and Wagners Boiler Plate, P. L. Hallums Roll Bama, and Fox Covert Farms Cimmerona are expected to draw a bulk of support! against Bee Tee Stables improving Equi-more, W. F. Salisburys All in One, Van Berg Stables Black Billings, and D. Za-koors Activate. The latter finished third Tjehirid Cimmerona and Jandy in the six furlongs Durand Rotary Purse May 25.
