On the Trot I Br MORRIE KURLANSKY Attractive Finale at Fox Valley Darn Safe Vies With Earls Song BHaven Goes in Pacing Feature MAYWOOD PARK, Maywood 111., June 3. — The Fox Valley Trotting Club concludes its meeting at Maywood Park Saturday 1 i . . night night with with an an excellent excellent night night with with an an excellent excellent ten-race program, which will fbei topped by two handicap races for the trotting and pacing elite as well as a special event that brings out the best three- and four -year-old pacers on the grounds. Hayes Fair Acres Stables gr-eat colorbearer Darn Safe, fastest fastest trotter trotter at at this this fastest fastest trotter trotter at at this this spring session and destined to take the place of his illustrious stablemate, Pronto Don, in the nations free-for-all ranks in the opinion of racing secretary Pete ley finally has found his match here as the invader from the Maryland circuit, Earls Song, has been assigned the outside post position. The latter, a five-year-old mare by the great Victory Song, out of the Scot-" land mare, Josie Scot, not. only is bred in the purple, but her accomplishments on the race track since her two-year-old form are equally distinguished. Ranking with the best sophomores of her year Earls Song raced to a 2:00 mile two seasons ago and on occasions defeated the likes of Kimberly Kid, Scotch Victor, and Jamie. In three starts this year the brilliant mare was victorious twice. She will have the sulky services of Castleton Farm head trainer Wayne "Curly" Smart. With all due respect for the ability of McDarnley, Sir Gallon, and Deckwin, even the slight advantage of the inner post positions wont help very much against such speedsters as Darn Safe and Earls Song. In the pacing feature BHaven, who preferred this race to a Hazel Park event for which he was invited, once again will have to be at his speedy best if he is to turn back such formidable opponents as Queens Adios, Honors Truax, Warpath, and Gay Order. If weather and track conditions are right on Saturday night, this race may well produce the magic 2:00 clocking as Warpath and Honors Truax can be depended on to set a blistering pace while each of the other three starters, BHaven, Queens Adios, and Gay Order, have a great reputation for great finishing power. Blue Goose, Darn Good Pick, and Plutocrat with the assistance of Easy Adios and Chivalry, will try to prove in the supporting feature that this years three-year-olds are the best ever seen in Chicago. The four-year-olds Swans Bay, Adam Dale, and Mist of Scotland might find them a hard lot to beat. The midweek program at Maywood Park was devoted to the improvement of state-bred trotting and pacing colts and fillies, and a quartet of mile dashes, each endowed with a ,875 purse, saw some of the more chanceful aspirants for the Illinois State Fair Colt Stakes at Springfield later in the season in action. In fact, C. E. Dickeys three-year-old trotting filly Gracie Colleen, whose triumph in the two-year-old division of the state-sponsored Springfield event netted her in excess of 0,000, gave indications that she will be a foremost contender in her division. Driven by that sporting southern gentleman Tom Wilbum, already successful with the same patrons Rivertown in the first race of the night, the Peter Colleen daughter ridiculed her seven opponents winning, by 10 lengths in 2:09M . Most likely Gracie Colleens most dangerous rivals will come out of the East in the shape of the Arden Homestead Stables strapping full sister to world champion trotter Florican, Florette, and Felix Hanover, who is training smartly for Del Miller, the famous, Pennsylvania harness horseman. There is, however, another Illinois-bred trotting filly that might share in the 0,000 Springfield purse. She is C. L. Myers Pauls ,Girl,-a relative to May-wood Park track record holder Marcia D. Winning seven out of her 14 starts last year Pauls Girl gave a brilliant performance on Wednesday night trouncing her field in 2:11%, the time no indication of her actual speed as the filly made a break at the start and thereafter was required to race on the outside for almost the entire mile. Two who possess the same bloodlines as proven campaigners won the two divisions of the two-year-old pace stakes. The already mentioned Rivertown, a full brother to C. E. Dickeys pacing filly Victory Melody, was much the best in his heat drawing out at will and actually pulling himself in the homestretch when left without opponents. The high headed, long striding chestnut gelding should have a good future ahead of him. In the second division Peter Havens guided by Benny Schue scored for the Mayes Fair Acres Stables, the Du Quoin outfit having bought the colt with his mother, the distinguished broodmare Mamies Bay, dam of the 2:00 pacing mare Miss Mamie owned by Paul Wixom of Chicago, and now a px-oducer in her own right. Wednesdays pacing events for performers in class BB and B, respectively, ended with mild surprises. Directs Boy, coming off a dismally bad effort last week when he was last beaten some 25 lengths in a race won by Sammy Court, took the lead in the BB event before they reached the first quarter pole and withstood all challengers for a 2:07 victory. The reason for the sudden improvement: different shoeing. In the nightcap, outsider King Gaines, whose best effort in his last 10 starts was a fourth last October at Hollywood Park, blossomed forth in the final quarter of his race for B class pacers to win easily in 2:05%. The Kings Counsel gelding owned, trained and driven by Ray Gillilan, formerly of Elgin, 111., and now residing in Del Mar, Calif., for a while belonged to the nations free-for-all pacing elite until involved in an accident at Santa Anita in April, 1954.
