Feminine Feminine Speedsters Speedsters in in Honeymoon; Honeymoon; Peter Peter Pan Pan Handicap Handicap Engages Engages Eight Eight Nances Lad Looms Choice at Belmont Flying FuryrPortersville And Little Dell Also Seen Threats in 1,500 Event By BOB HORWOOD Staff Correspondent BELMONT PARK, Elmont, L. I., N. Y., June 3.-The sixteenth running of the Peter Pan Handicap for three-year-olds, a stepping stone to the cla.Tsic Belmont Stakes on June 11 is the stakes attraction here Saturday. This test, which has attracted what at this time appears to be distinctly second-flight sophomores, is supported by the 5,000 Manhasset Handicap, an overnight event at a flat mile with a field of stake horses. Before the field of eight named for the Peter Pan is lightly dismissed as deficient in class, it might be recalled that two of the last four winners of this mile and a ; furlong stake had even less in -the way of credentials at the time of its running than several in tomorrows renewal, but went on to become the leaders of their division. In 1951, C. V. Whitneys Counterpoint came back from a dismal race in the Kentucky Derby and a well-beaten second to Bold in the Preakness to turn back Battlefield in the Peter Pan, then go on to win the-Belmont and eventually bcome the Horse of the Year. Last year, High Gun. had been beaten in six races starting at Jamaica before beating Fisherman in the Peter Pan. The son of Heliopolis then won the Belmont and became the sophomore champion. Flying Fury Shoulders 121 This years Peter Pan will gross 1,500 and net the winner 2,450 if all eight go postward. Cain Hoy Stables Flying Fury has the moderate top weight of 121 pounds and has not started since turning in a dull effort in the Kentucky Derby. Before that, the son of Nasrullah won the Derby Trial, at one mile, at Churchill Downs for his only victory this year. His best races Continued on Page Fifty Peter Pan Draws Eight Postward Nances Lad Looms Choice Over Flying Fury, Little Dell, Portersville Today Continued from Page One last year were a third to Summer Tan and Simmy in The Garden State and a second between Thinking Cap and Saratoga in the Pimlico Futurity. Hank Moreno will ride. Hilton A. "Rabbit" Dabsons Nances Lad is next in the Peter Pan weights with 120 pounds and will probably be a tepid choice. The son of Slide Rule from the speedy Nances Ace was reported to have rapped himself slightly in the Preakness, in which he finished fourth to Nashua, Saratoga and Traffic Judge, while before that he finished second to Traffic Judge in the mile. Withers Stakes here at Belmont and won the seven-furlong Swift. John Cho-quette, his regular pilot, will be aboard. Clearwater Stables Portersville and C. V. Whitneys Little Dell, who carry 118 and 117 pounds, respectively, appear to be improving colts. Portersville finished fairly well td be third in the Withers, beaten a little less than three lengths, while the son of Count Fleet captured a swiftly run mile and a sixteenth before that, beating Honeys Alibi and others. Paul Bailey will ride the colt, who has the number 1 post position. Little Dell was an undistinguished fifth in the Withers, but came back with a rather impressive victory at a mile and a sixteenth at Delaware Park. Hedley Wood-house will ride the roan son of Mahmoud, who will be trying to emulate Counterpoint and Jeep, who won earlier Peter Pans in the Whitney silks. The field is completed by George D. Wideners Mandil, 113; Sanford Stud Farms Sacandaga, 108; A. B. Gays Courtship, 107, and King Ranchs Retamero, also 107 pounds. Mandil has at times given some intimations of class, along with a tendency to swerve* and finished third in the Chesapeake Stakes, then failed to raise a gallop in the Withers. He has more than his share of the Nasrullah temperament. Augustine Catalano will ride. Sacandaga, who will be ridden by Willie Lester, comes from an easy triumph over moderate horses at a mile and a sixteenth on a sloppy track. Courtship, a recent graduate, raced on the inside- rail for half of his latest mile race, then was taken extremely wide for the second half. He will have the services of Conn McCreary and I could improve sharply. Retamero was beaten 11 lengths by Scandaga last out, won a maiden race before that and will be piloted by Bill Boland. Straight Face Tops Manhasset Greentree Stables Straight Face, who will be ridden by Eddie Arcaro in place of the absent Ted Atkinson, heads the Manhasset field with 124 pounds. He will have a running mate in Diving Board, 110 pounds and Bill Boland. The entry may be favored, though Straight Face, showed nothing last week in his first start since he scored ah easy triumph in last years Suburban, after forcing Native Dancer to a photo in the Metropolitan Mile and winning the Dixie. The Count Fleet gelding probably needed that race and was also kept on the deep inside rail every step of the way. Diving Board won his last on the disqualification of Ashenden. Four of the Manhasset candidates have been racing out of town, with Brookmeade Stables Capeador, 120, turning in the best performance to be second to Subahdar, beaten two lengths, in the mne-furlong Camden Handicap at Garden State. Wheat-ley Stables Full Flight, 113, finished third in that race, then turned in a bad race in the Brandywine Handicap at Delaware. Arnold Hangers Iceberg n. turned in a fair race at Pimlico, then came back with a very bad one and is regarded as primarily a turf specialist. He gets in with 109 pounds and could be very dangerous. Char- fran Stables Brown Booter bolted when unable to handle the sharp clubhouse turn in a turf stake at Suffolk Downs for his first outing in some time, but has turned in some of his best races on the main track at Belmont Park. The son of Our Boots carries 110 pounds. Capeador will have a running mate in First Aid, 116 pounds and Hedley Wood-house has been named for both horses. First Aid was disqualified from fourth place for bearing out in the Metropolitan after having led into the stretch. The field is completed by Woodley Lane Farms Red Hannigan, 116, who won the Roseben here, turned in a dull race in the Provinces, then finished third to Hartsville and Mr. Turf at Belmont; Ethel D. Jacobs Paper Tiger, an erratic sort, like most Stymies, 110; Flying L Stables Chief Fa-nelli, a recent, allowance winner, 113, and J. M. Roeblings occasionally classy sopho-more filly, Crisset, with a feathery 102 pounds. I
