Senator Jim, Ace Marine/ Silver Pat Trial Victors Previews for Queens Plate at Woodbi ne Draw Crowd of 7,088 I By JACK AYERS Staff Correspondent WOODBINE PARK, Toronto, Ont, June 3. — Andrew Adams Manitohal-bred Silver Spat, Stafford Farms Senator Jim and Larkin Maloneys Ace Marine were returned winners of the three divisions of the mile and 70 yards Plate Trial No. 2, here this afternoon. From a time standpoint and the manner in which each winner sped to the finish marker, Senator Jims score was definitely the most impressive. The events were contested over a fast racing strip and. before a fine week-day crowd of 7,088 fans. Ace Marine reached the close of his division four and a quarter lengths in the van of Cliff Bennetts Dorenes Lad, who managed to outfinish E. P. Taylors Windermere by a diminishing neck. Although first out of the starting gate, Ace Marine gave way to John Stuarts Indifferent on the first turn. The Maloney colt took over again after straightening out in the backstretch then gave way again on the last turn, this time to Dorenes Lad. When shaken up by George Walker, Ace Marine moved off into a clear lead before rounding the last arc and was kept under mild intermittent punishment from there home. Ace Marine was an even money risk with the talent and he covered his mile and 70 yards in 1:44%, four fifths of a second slower than Senator Jims hime but three-fifths of a second hetter than Silver Pat. Senator Jim, gray-coated son of Bunty-Continued on Page Fifty-Two Senator Jim, Ace Marine, Silver Pat Trial Victors Previews for Queens Plate at Woodbine Draw Crowd of 7,088 Continued from Page Three Lawless and Bright Jewel, carried the silks of the Stafford Farms to a most convincing score in the second division of the Plate Trial. The winner came to the close of the mile and 70 yards five and a half lengths in advance of James G. Fars Fairator, who was another, four lengths the best of Jack Begans Fleet Brenda. Mrs. R. E. Cooks Fleet Countess was fourth while E. P. Taylors highly fancied Bright Flash was a fading sixth after forcing the early pace. , Allowed to race on his own courage early, Avelino Gomez did not ask the Stafford Farms entrant for a thing until midway of the last turn, a point where Fairator took command when placed to punishment. After straightening out in the home lane, Senator Jim moved to Fairator with ease, disposed of the Fair runner quickly then came with authority all the final 70 yards. Fairator was not menaced -for second honors, as Fleet Brenda was not making up any appreciable yards at the close. Senator Jim was clocked in a fine 1:43%, one and two-fifths seconds faster than the Westerner Silver Spat registered. The winners time was also a fifth of a second better than that recorded by E. P. Taylors Queens Own last spring. Senator Jim paid .90. Andy Adams Silver Spat, Manitoba-bred son of Blue Royal n. and Coslip, completely upset calculations in the first division of the Plate Trial. Ridden perfectly by jockey Johnny Dewhurst, the winner made the grade by a neck over Mrs. E. P. Taylors Merry Life, who was just a head before Staff ard Farms favored Bernford. William A. Moffatts Loyalist was fourth, coming from last position to gain the short award. Silver Spat was a rank outsider, paying 59;80, a record straight pay-off of the season. He toured the mile and 70 yards in 1 45. * Merry Life had all -the speed of the party, while Silver Spat, after racing forwardly placed in the opening quarter, dropped back slightly. Merry Life saved all possible ground while steadied in front, but gave way slightly to Silver Spat in the early homestretch. The pair battled it out stubbornly all through the last furlong, with the Westerner hanging on tenaciously to gain the award. Merry Lifes race was a corker and at the finish marker was going along stride for stride with the ultimate winner. Bernford and Loyalist, two of the most highly regarded Plate hopefuls, came with fine energy when set down for their best, and both appear equal to the nine furlongs of next Saturdays Queens Plate.
