Favored Nahodah Takes Baltimore Spring Cap Gives Culmone and Bonsai Triple On Opening Program at Pimlico By PALMER HEAGERTY PIMLICO, Baltimore, Md., May 6.— The Maryland Jockey Clubs abbreviated 12-day spring meeting, which will feature the 81st running of the Preakness. commenced at Pimlico this afternoon and a crowd of 10,019 saw Montpeliers Nahodah successfully launch his four-year-old campaign while completing "triples" for jockey Joe Culmone and trainer Frank A. Bonsai. Nahodah. a son of Nasrullah nd Accra, by Annapolis, was a solid favorite and looped, his field to score by a length and a half over George W. Parkers Sand Boy after completing the six furlongs of the Baltimore Spring Hnadicap in 1:12. Less than a length farther back in third position came Mrs. Colin MacLeods Obair. Considerable support for Nahodah was responsible for a minus show pool of ,578.82. Eugene Constantin Jr.s Evening Tempo was the pacemaker in the feature but was closely pressed by Augustine J. Evening Tempo remained in front until entering the stretch, where Nahodah moved boldly from the outside to wrest command. For a brief time, it appeared that Obair might become a serious threat but his bid fell far short and Nahodah drew clear to score cleverly. Evening Tempo faded to fourth position, as Ralph Schwarzs well-played Star Spangle finished last. Dixie Handicap prospects met over the grass in the mile and a sixteenth sixth race and three probables for the week-end affair earned the money position. The winner by a nose was Dhu Van-en Farms Lovely Shade, with Mrs. R. H. Lomas Gallant Tonto second over Greentree Stables favored Maharajah. The winner, a chance, was nicely handled by apprentice Reggie Root, and was timed in 1:45%. Lovely Shade, the lone filly in todays field, attained command and the hedge position early, following which she was nicely rated while closely pressed by Gallant Tonto. The latter attained a slight advantage at the furlong marker, but gave way in the final drive, as Maharajah was just two lengths back despite being rank and lugging in badly through the stretch. Brabant Rose Scores Montpeliers Black Eyed Susan prospect, Brabant Rose, turned in a splendid seasonal bow when she charged from last place to beat a field of three-year-old fillies at six furlongs in the fifth race. The Flushing II. — Shipshape II. filly, a half sister to Saratoga, was far back in the run along the backstretch, but circled her field impressively to be timed in 1:13*5, and pay . Howell E. Jacksons Wagaway was a neck behind the winner and a length before Nydrie Stables Morn Again. Brabant Rose completed consevutive doubles for jockey Joe Culmone and trainer-Frank Bonsai. The team had won the previous race, a six-furlong affair, with Mrs. Emilie Davies veteran. Bradley, while out-finishing Harry Dorseys Zuyder Zee and Vincent Stotts Lord Henry.
