i 1 Clem McCarthy Doing Well; Fractures Hip in Auto Accident NEW YORK, N. Y., May 6.— Veteran racing commentator Clem McCarthy was reported in "satisfactory condition and resting comfortably" at Mt. Sinai Hospital today after suffering a fractured hip and facial contusion in an automobile accident Saturday night. McCarthy, 80, was riding with Mr. and Mrs. Edward Owens on the Major Deegan Expressway, when the car went out of control and struck a light pole near West 240th Street in The Bronx. Owens, who was driving, escaped with a cut on his nose, but his wife suffered -a fracture. McCarthys hip was operated on at 8:00 p. m. last night and reports from Mt. Sinai this morning stated that the veteran was doing well.
