Cohoes Scores by Two Lengths in 1957 Debut Skips Six Furlongs in 1:11%; Timely Bull Runner-up by Nose By BOB HOBWOOD JAMAICA, L. I., N. Y., May 6.— With Ted Atkinson twirling his whip with a flourish as they went under the wire, Greentree Stables Cohoes carried him to a convincing two -length triumph here today in his first start since the son of Mahmoud finished second to Missile in last years Pimlico Futurity. Mrs. Wallace Gilroys Timely Bull finished second in this featured Rock Hill Purse, a nose before Louis Lazares Hicks Error. Lightweight of the field under 113 pounds, Cohoes was backed down to .20 by the crowd of 24,207 and made the track look really fast by skipping the six furlongs in 1:11%. The local strip was scratched, watered and rolled for more than 10 feet out from the inner rail after the training hours this morning, which was reflected in the times of most of the races. A son of Mahmoud from Belle of Troy, by Blue Larkspur, Cohoes at times appeared to be one of the leaders of the present generation of three -year-olds, while also turning in some exceedingly bad races when least expected. His two victories in 11 starts were in a swift five and a half furlongs at Belmont Park in June and in the Grand Union oHtel Stakes at Saratoga, while he was second twice and third twice. Jujitsu and Cohoes were first out of the gate at the start of the feature, but Pleasant Sid quickly opened a slight lead. Jujitsu was close beside the pacemaker in the run around the far turn," with Cohoes close at hand on the outside, a couple of lengths before Hicks Error, who was another four lengths before Timely Bull, while Louken-mac completed the field. Cohoes took the lead when mildly roused turning for home and quickly took a daylight lead. He was put to a hand ride leaving the furlong pole, but completely dominated his five rivals through the stretch and, after looking back a couple of times, Atkinson gave his baton twirl with his whip right at the wire. Timely Bull closed with a belated rush to nose out Hicks Error, while Pleasant Sid was a weary fourth, followed by Jujitsu and Loukenmac.
