Eight to Contest Swigert at Churchill GrissomNamesPcw For One-Mile Event Dru Away, Bernburgoo Likely To Provide Main Opposition To Invalidate and Big Sweep By DON FAIR CHURCHILL DOWNS, Louisville , Ky.. May 6. — The Swigert Purse, a one-mile condition race for four-year-olds and up which lured an overnight field of eight sturdy middle -distance performers, will top a good Tuesday program at this South Louisville racing grounds. Six interests are represented in the Swigert, the T. Alie Grissom establishment having named a pair, Invalidate, 119, and Big Sweep, 110 pounds. In the band named to oppose the Detroit-owned duo are Rothmore Farms Munchausen, 110; M. J. Rosenthals hardhitting Dru Away, 122. and Mrs. Harvey C. Fruehaufs Precious Stone, 119 pounds. Also Hasty House Farms Grandpa w. 119; Alamode Stables Ja Ja, 122, and Bernburgoo, a member of the Holtsinger and Mcllvain barn, 119 pounds under the Swigert allowances. Early choices for the Tuesday headliner are Dru Away, Invalidate, and Bernburgoo. Dru Away, a five-year-old Escadru-sired gelding, recently beat Pomace, Thievery, French Bleu, Munchausen and several other shifty racers in an overnight sprint, while Invalidate and Bernburgoo were sharp enough to finish third and fourth, respectively, to Swoons Son and Sea O Erin in the seven-furlongs Churchill Downs Handicap last week. Heckmann to Ride Dru Away Jockey Johnny Heckmann will be in the irons on Dru Away, Willie Lucas is engaged for Bernburgoo and Johnny Ralph Adams will be astride either Invalidate or i Big Sweep. Precious Stone, a seven-year-old altered son of Royal Gem II. and Cash Book, is slated to make his local seasonal debut in the Swigert. The Fruehauf stalwart, lightly campaigned during 1956, defeated a good j field at Hialeah in January, stepping nine furlongs in 1:4925. After arrival here. Precious Stone displayed good speed in his morning trials, the Downs clocking staff reporting him razor sharp. Precious Stone will have the saddle services of capable Doutilas Dodson. Johnny Sellers is named on Ja Ja, Johnny Adams rides Grandpaw, while Munchausen was an open Swigert Purse mount late today. With the 1957 Kentucky Derby Week a matter of history, racing secretary Allan Lavin and his staff members are bending every effort to make the last two weeks of the spring meet one of the best in history. Along with several important overnight events, the 0,000 Louisville Handicap, one mile and one-sixteenth for three-year-olds and up, and the Bashford Manor Stakes, a five-eights mile dash for two-year-old colts and geldings, are scheduled for renewals. The Louisville Handicap will feature the Saturday, May 11, program and the Bash-ford Manor is to serve as the major attraction on the Saturday, May 18 closing-day program.
