C. Logsdons consistent Herb S, winner of nine races last year, scored a hollow victory here Saturday night in the featured six and one -half furlongs Belleville Handicap before 6,466 fans, largest gathering of the year. The six-year-old gelded son of Hampden defeated Raymond R. Thomas Bumper Crop, the Stelle Farms odds-on favorite Chief Fanelli, Miss Kirkwood and Chic Bettyann in that order. Alertly handled by the veteran L. J. Col-clasure, Herb S. was hustled to the first turn and before traversing the opening quarter was three lengths ahead of Bumper Crop who was a head before the favorite, followed by Miss Kirkwood and Chic Bettyann. As they went down the back-stretch and neared the far turn Colclasure took his mount back for a breather but was still three lengths in front and Bumper Crop and Chief Fanelli, lapped on each other, as Miss Kirkwood moved into the fourth slot. At the head of the stretch the ultimate winner increased his advantage to four lengths over Bumper Crop, who drew away from Chief Fanelli by a length. As they straightened out for the drive Herb S. began to bear out three-sixteenths from the finish but he had enough left to win by three and one-half lengths. At the end Bumper Crop was a length before Chief Fanelli, who bested Miss Kirkwood by two lengths. Waco Girl won the opener under R. McEwen, defeating OHerrons Boy, the favorite; Capodocian, and nine others. Slamming Slam, the public choice, copped the second under the guidance of the veteran Colclasure. The aged gelding made each post a winning one to complete a 4.40 Daily Double. Under a rousing ride by Leon "Bumpy" Grandsart, Telary scored a narrow victory over Meat Market in the third race. Ahsa Beauty, the choice, was third. The fourth : was the second best on the card and Brown i Pirate led throughout easily defeating Mucho Frio and Slinker. W. T. Stevens held the reins on the winner. Country News sprang a surprise in win- i ning the fifth, while Fancy Filly scored a j clean-cut victory in the sixth. R. E. Young i rode Country News while apprentice J. Dailey was aboard Fancy Filly. The meeting swings into the second full week of the sport with the running of the Tuesday card and the program honors , prominent Illinois state officials. A pair , allowance races are co-features. The seventh has been named the Illinois As- : i i j i , , sembly Purse and the other will be the Sen. Roland Li bona ti Purse.
