Unseasonable Weather Chilled! Both Derby Crowd and Mutuels CHURCHILL DOWNS. Louisville. Ky. May 6.— While the result of the 83d Kentucky Derby here Saturday probably will stir heated discussions for years to come. Derby Day 1957, itself, no doubt will be remembered as one of the coldest days on which the big race has ever been run. The unseasonable cold kept the crowd and the mutuel handle down, but the Derby nevertheless demonstrated its magnetism as a sporting attraction by luring a vast turnout of 90,000 chilled fans. The decline of more than 00,000 in the mutuel handle from last years total was attributed to the cold, as most of the crowd left the track after the running of the Derby, the betting on the last two races on the program thus dropping sharply. Many fans — mostly visitors from other parts of the country who wore lightweight summer clothes — found the cold weather too much for them and left the track even before the Derby running. The taxicab companies reported they made nearly 400 trips fro mthe track back to downtown Louisville before Derby post time.
